Davonte Fitzgerald Scouting Report

Since we don't know a whole lot about him, I went over to the Texas A & M boards to get some info. Here are some quotes.

The Bad:

"Davonte just shot this post"

"well he likes to shoot a lot.."

"If he's 3-15 from the field, expect him to take another 10 shots."

"Took a lot of bad shots and was on a short leash."

The Good:

"Very athletic"

"Very pretty looking three point shot. If confident, has potential to score a bunch behind the arc."

"Lot of athletic potential there and, as said, he can really shoot well."

"Lots of potential"

"He was maybe our best player as a freshman and there was high hopes. Has potential."

Podcast: March Gopher Report

GI Radio isn't going anywhere, just wanted to test out Podbean, a new site we're using at Rivals.com

On this podcast MJH (Matt Jessen-Howard) and I talk Gopher football: Who can make an immediate impact in the class of 2016, what is the staff looking for in 2017, and how the quarterback situation this spring could make things interesting this summer.

Jon Christenson Article

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/032116aaa.html

Nice to see Jon recognized for his efforts off the field. Going to come out of school with his Masters and a nice career pathway.

"He arrived on campus as a walk-on but went on to earn a scholarship. Christenson was the Gophers’ starting center in 2013 before suffering a broken leg, which he was able to diagnose on the field. He played 2014 with a rod in his leg...."

Looks like he spent his time wisely, and made the most of it. Lesson in there somewhere.

Adam LaRoche

Alright, I saw this and immediately became confused. I guess Adam LaRoche up and retired from baseball because the White Sox told him he couldn't bring his son into the clubhouse all the time. He's leaving 13 MILLION DOLLARS on the table because of this. And it's not like Kenny Williams told him the kid couldn't ever come around, it was just like a "tone it back dude" type deal. I personally think the Sox made the right move here.

Is LaRoche dumb!? That's pure craziness to me.

Potential Grad Transfer for Next Year Part 2

There is also this guy

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20160314/PC20/160319637/1032/

I have a connection here to somebody that knows him well. He told me that he feels Minnesota will be one of many to reach out. But by many, I mean many. This kid is going to have any top program with a scholarship wanting to add him as a shooter/scorer. He took a lot of shots this year scoring 20 a game so his percentages fell to 40/33/85 but still a kid that many want.

My guy says Canyon will be wide open and most likely dad is the guy that will make the call. And this will not be a quick decision. Expect visits and lots of courting. When the lists start growing I think Minnesota may be on there but so will 30 other HM schools.

2017 Prospect Watch: Terrell Turner

I have about 10-12 of these to do. Turner is a shooter who scores with feet set or with the one dribble left pull-up. He's been at Sunrise Christian this year and very little has been said about him since. Sometimes that happens at preps as they don't have much media coverage and many of them don't do it themselves either.

Remember, Bakary and Dupree played at Sunrise.

Potential Grad Transfer for Next Year

Nate Kratch from Watertown, Minnesota who has been at Santa Clara for four years.

For whatever reason a Georgia site posted that Nate is likely to be a grad transfer, maybe they think that he may look their way. I've heard locally that he is likely to transfer some where grad transfer wise because his head coach was fired and he's graduating. The thought of Minnesota has come up but Georgia, Minnesota, or nobody else can talk to him because he hasn't made it official.

Would he be a good grad transfer? It would make some sense for a few reasons.

1) If somebody transfers the scholarship is going to a 2017 most likely so he is just holding the scholarship for one year until that player comes

2) He is from here. Makes sense.

3) At 6-ft-8 and 226 pounds he is a worker four man that averaged 9 points and 8 rebounds a game last season. Shot 55 percent from the floor this year but has stopped shooting treys altogether. Shot 35 percent from the arc on 57 treys as a sophomore, 9 in the last two years. Very strange. Works hard, rebounds well.

4) Gophers need another frontcourt body and a PF would be perfect. Would be expected to come off the bench behind Murphy and the centers, is insurance for Curry, would have veteran experience that could likely play with Murphy in a small line-up. It would give the Gophers 2 centers and 3 PFs, they would be deeper

Now, if Charles Buggs stays I would imagine that he would go back to the PF role that he had when he was younger and he would be the back-up behind Murphy with Curry.

So, would you rather have Kratch, or Buggs? Interesting thoughts. Kratch is an excellent worker as a defender and rebounder.

All of this is hearsay until he officially transfers and who knows if Minnesota would even want him. Something to watch.

#SouthDakotaMatters

As a former South Dakotan, it is unbelievable that South Dakota would be better than Minnesota in basketball.

The men's team loses to both of the Dakotas. The women's team loses today to the Coyotes, and SDSU wins against Miami in the NCAA Tourney yesterday.

It is crazy to see this, as a kid, the Dakotas were simply happy to not lose by 20 to a Gopher team.

History fans: hard to believe it has been 35 years

North Carolina will play Indiana next Thursday in Philadelphia for the sweet 16..... As I thought about it, it has been 35 years ago(6 days short of 35 years to the day of their game this Thursday ) that Indiana beat North Carolina in Philadelphia for the national championship. March 30, 1981... It was also the day that President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. They almost postponed the national championship that day.. If you are old enough to remember, the NCAA had a 3rd place game then for the losing teams in the semifinals in those years so you were always guaranteed 2 games in the Final Four, win or lose....The NCAA started the 3rd place game late that day because of the happenings with Reagan. When the championship game started, Indiana beat North Carolina 63-50.

That Indiana team was led by Isiah Thomas.. If you remember, Ted Kitchel for Indiana had back problems and only played a few minutes of that game. If you want a story very close to the farm boy characters in the movie, HOOSIERS, it was Kitchel.. Even more so than Steve Alford 6 years later though people make him the ultimate example of Indiana schoolboy basketball. Kitchel was the one raised on a farm and practiced out in his dad's tool shed on the farm where there was a basket.

That team had Ray Tolbert, Randy Wittman, Jim Thomas, and Landon Turner.. Turner, of course, had that tragic car accident just months after the national championship that left him paralyzed. Very easily could have been the #1 selection in the draft BEFORE James Worthy the next year. The North Carolina team they beat was the year before Michael Jordan got there.. They had Sam Perkins, James Worthy, Matt Doherty, Jimmy Black, and Al Wood.. That game was also the last national championship that NBC had with the broadcast team of Dick Enberg, Al McGuire, and Billy Packer as CBS took the broadcast rights after that to the present.

Turner's injury changed the balance of the Big Ten.. Bobby Knight shot off his mouth about Minnesota's 1978 recruiting class(I would argue the most talented Gopher class ever). Knight said they would never win the Big Ten. Well, Minnesota won the Big Ten next year, as those guys were seniors.. That Minnesota class had Leo Rautins, Darryl Mitchell, Trent Tucker, Gary "Cookie" Holmes, and Mark Hall. I have talked to Indiana people who claim that if Turner had not been paralyzed, that the Hoosiers would have repeated as Big Ten champs instead of the Gophers winning it

I wrote this a few years back but this is how people were influenced by Minnesota... Darryl Mitchell's dad was a civil rights attorney in Florida..His dad remembered what Hubert Humphrey did for social justice and the reputation Minnesota had in recruiting African American athletes... Mitchell was a top PG recruit, nationally.. Cookie Holmes was also highly recruited as a big from Florida.. Leo Rautins' dad knew a guy from 3M that transferred up to Toronto that was a huge Gopher fan that influenced the interest of the family and eventually Rautins to sign.. He was called the white Canadian version of Magic Johnson. Best HS player in Canada.. He eventually transferred to Syracuse. Jim Dutcher knew about Trent Tucker from Flint, Michigan when he was an assistant at Michigan and continued to recruit him but to Minnesota instead. Also a top national recruit. Dont know the story of Mark Hall. Just thought I would share the story on a Sunday morning to reminisce.

Gophers offer 2018 TE from Tampa Bay

Judge Culpepper, a 6-5 tight end from Plant HS in Tampa, Fl received an offer today from the Gophers.

Judge is the son of former NFL defensive end Brad Culpepper, who was drafted by the Vikngs in the early 1990s. Dad was a Florida Gator. Judge's older brother Rex will be a freshman QB at Syracuse.

Judges played some QB last season and was his teams starting QB on JV as a freshman.

March Madness

So, Duke pushed to the limits by UNC-Wilmington
Texas Tech gets bounced early (making Tubby haters worldwide smirk if only a little bit)

Colorado looking good early over UConn
Iowa State's once-massive lead over Iona continues to shrink before half

If those hold, I'd be 3-1/4-0 in all my brackets thus far. I flip-flopped between Iowa State getting upset and beating Iona in all my brackets

New Illini coach Lovie Smith has filled out his staff, and he's got a nice recruiting tool in place

http://www.thechampaignroom.com/201...aff-lovie-smith-fighting-illini-football-news

Head Coach: Lovie Smith (Link)
Offensive Coordinator: Garrick McGee (Link)
Defensive Coordinator: Hardy Nickerson
Offensive Line Coach: Luke Butkus (Link)
Wide Receivers Coach: Andrew Hayes-Stoker (Link)
Running Backs Coach: EMPTY
Defensive Line Coach: Mike Phair (Returning)

Lovie stole Bobby Petrino's OC in Garrick McGee, got former NFL great and current 49ers assistant coach Hardy Nickerson as DC, and he's got a Butkus back on campus to coach his OLine.

I'll admit, that's a better staff than I thought he would put together. I think it's totally brilliant to be able to brand yourself as the only staff in America with an African American head coach, OC, and DC. Football coaches are disproportionately white compared to players.

THAT is gonna play well in a lot of living rooms. Back when I thought we were gonna hire Charlie Strong, I was hoping he would come and hire a largely African-American staff. Such a great way to brand yourself right off the bat.

Also, raise your hand if you thought the Illini would be willing to pay 900K for a coordinator?!? I sure didn't.

Lovie has impressed me a lot already. Minnesota is gonna have to continue improving facilities going forward, and obviously after a big season this fall (crosses fingers)---Claeys and co. will need a contract closer to what Kill had.
