Football Darius Taylor Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Taylor Tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Week

University of Minnesota running back Darius Taylor was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week today after a dominant performance against Eastern Michigan.

Taylor, who is a true freshman, rushed 33 times for 193 yards and one touchdown in Minnesota’s 25-6 win. He had one carry in the season-opener against Nebraska and then carried the ball 33 times against the Eagles.

His 193 yards were second most in school history for a true freshman, behind only Darrell Thompson who rushed for 205 yards against Bowling Green in 1986. Taylor rushed eight times for 44 yards in the first half before logging 25 carries for 149 yards in the second half. His lone touchdown of the game was a two-yard burst in the second quarter.

He had six runs of 10 yards or more, which included scampers of 22 yards and 21 yards in the third quarter. He added 13 receiving yards to finish the game with 206 all‐purpose yards.

Taylor's 193 rushing yards were the second most in the nation in Week 2 (and the most in an non-overtime game) as only North Carolina's Omarion Hampton had more yards with 234 in a double overtime win against Appalachian State.

Taylor is Minnesota’s first Big Ten Freshman of the Week since quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis received the honor on Nov. 28, 2022.

Football Week 3 Opening Presser Notes - 9/11

-Coach Fleck spoke about how every carry Darius Taylor earned was earned rep by rep. Mentioned we can't be put the football on the ground. Even Darius may have been surprised at how many carries he got but he earned them.
- Fleck mentioned they have other talented RBs on the team as well but will need to earn it and prove it.
-The gameplan for week 2 was absolutely to establish the ground game and there were some series in the game in which Coach Fleck emphasized he wanted a run when something else may have been the intial call.
-Coach Fleck gave Drake Maye all the praise and said he is impressed by what he has shown and the poise he maintains.
-Coach Fleck called Mack Brown a "distant" mentor of his and that he has had a relationship with the UNC HC for about 8 years. Nothing but great things to say about Mack on the field and as a human off the field
-PJ Fleck mentioned that Greg Johnson (true freshman OL) will play this season and the intention is he will play more than just 4 games. He would be the first true freshman OL to start since Daniel Faalele.

Football Gophers Presser After the EMU Victory

Lots covered after today's presser

-PJ Fleck said the team needs to improve in all areas still. Was an exhausting win. Gives credit to the EMU team and their defense. Shouted out their LB a couple times
-Fleck liked what he saw from the running game but was not happy at all that the ball got put on the ground 3 times (regardless of it going out of bounds twice)
-He's happy with the pass rush and praised the defense's adjustments in the 2nd half
-Mentioned they need to get more RBs involved includimg Zach Evans but stated those touches need to be earned, they wont be just given.
-Cody Lindenberg was a close call for today but they're hoping he'll be back next week
-Brevyn Spann-Ford told coach he was okay in the lockerroom
-Darius Taylor's biggest takeaway was sticking to his preparation and the details.
-Both Fleck and Athan were really proud of the work from the OL

Gotta drive home but you can find video clips from the presser on my twitter @GophersKaneRob. I will try to link them here when I get home.
