Nebraska reportedly considering triple-option coaches if it can’t get Scott Frost

As Nebraska’s season winds to a close, reports about Mike Riley’s job status and potential replacements are heating up. The latest, from SB Nation, says the Huskers would consider a coach who runs the triple option.

The piece, which lists bylines for Steven Godfrey, Richard Johnson, Bud Elliott, Alex Kirshner and Jason Kirk, mentions UCF Scott Frost as Nebraska’s “first choice,” but says the Huskers are considering a big change in scheme if he doesn’t end up in Lincoln.

From the report:

Nebraska is also considering coaches who run the triple-option, flexbone offense: Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo and Army’s Jeff Monken. If Nebraska approached Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, he would likely refer the Huskers toward Monken.

It also says the school parting ways with Riley is something that’s “likely to happen soon.”

Niumatalolo is a name that has often comes up in coaching searches during recent offseasons. He’s only had one losing season in 10 years at Navy, which is 6-4 in 2017.

The report also says that Florida is interested in Frost, but has concerns about his ability to build an SEC staff. It also says Oregon and Frost could be a fit if Ducks coach Willie Taggart moves to an SEC job. Frost served as offensive coordinator at Oregon before taking the UCF job after the 2015 season.
