Football Minnesota vs Eastern Michigan: Starters as recruits

We will have more preview content up tomorrow morning as well. Been a busy day that got away from me, and I have a high school game to cover, but we'll have matchups to watch, players to watch, and our gameday preview/predictions as well tomorrow!

Ragnow

That's Minnesotan Frank Ragnow (Chanhassen H.S./Arkansas) playing center for the Lions, and pulling on numerous plays to aid Detroit's offensive attack against the Chiefs. Ragnow was a 5.7 3* on Rivals, and the third-ranked player in Minnesota in the 2014 recruiting class. Ranked 1 and 2 were RB Jeff Jones, Washburn H.S. (committed to MN but never played there), and J.C. Hassenauer, OL, Eastridge/Alabama/Falcons,Steelers, Giants.

Football Big Ten Power Rankings

7. Minnesota: (1-0)

Week one result: 13-10 win over Nebraska

Week two matchup: vs. Eastern Michigan

PJ Fleck
and Minnesota came out on top of a defensive showdown against Nebraska to kick off the Big Ten slate on Thursday night.

While the Gophers got the victory, the offensive output creates cause for concern. The Athan Kaliakmanis led attack struggled until the end of the fourth quarter. Wide receivers Corey Crooms and Daniel Jackson did show the ability to be weapons on the outside.

Minnesota’s defense was as advertised, coming up with four takeaways and holding Nebraska to under 300 total yards on the day. Future NFL Draft pick Tyler Nubin came away with two interceptions on his own. One of the nation’s top defenses over the last two years looks to be in mid season form already for PJ Fleck.

Football Player Interview Takeaways: Eastern Michigan Week

Summarizing what Minnesota players said during Thursday's interview session

Athan Kaliakmanis:

- Watching Nebraska film left a bad taste in his mouth
- Was a little inaccurate
- Needs to be better fundamentally
- Scrambled a lot more than he needed too
- Wasn't as good as he wanted to be
- Eastern Michigan has a lot of good players, went 9-4 last year and won their bowl game
- Good throws come on the run, better throws come when you stay in the pocket
- Wants to stay in the pocket more

Corey Crooms:

- All the receivers took him in when he got to Minnesota in January
- Said Daniel Jackson and Autman-Bell were the two main guys he stuck by
- Took little pieces from their game and try to implement his own

Jalen Logan-Redding:

- Praised Winston DeLattiboudere on correcting assignments and techniques from the Nebraska game
- Putting a big emphasis on pass-rush this season
- Did what was necessary for the team (moving back-and-forth from three-tech to five)
- Have to be selfless to be a championship team

Danny Striggow:

- Some good, some bad on defense
- Had ups and downs, need to be more consistent
- Need to execute game plan the way it needs to be executed

Wrestling: Gable Opts Out of 2023 World Championships!

Intermat did a good interview with Coach Eggum today!

In it he said:

- Gable may still be back for this year, it just depends on what the WWE allows him to do.
- If Gable is back, Garrett Joles will go back down to 197.
- Jake Gliva will be back to wrestle 133.
- The interviewer Tony Rotundo said that Brayton Lee hurt his collarbone at the end of the year. He tried to come back from that, but it didn't work.
- He's excited that Vance VomBaur and Drew Roberts are going to have a good effect on our line-up!

Rotundo said that Intermat had our 2023 recruiting class ranked 14th. What a pile of hogwash, that's way too low!!! With Gavin Nelson (197) and Max McEnelly (184), Tyler Wells (133), Ethan Riddle (174) and Brandon Morvari (125), this class is much better than that!! Just Nelson and McEnelly would give anyone a top 5 class!!

These 2023 elite recruits will show them!!!

MINNEAPOLISZach Sanders has been promoted to assistant coach, Minnesota wrestling head coach Brandon Eggum announced Thursday.

Sanders has spent the past six seasons as the team's volunteer assistant coach, working primarily with the team's lightweights. Including his four years as an administrative assistant, he's been a member of the wrestling staff for over 10 seasons.

"I have given a lot of time and energy to the program because of the relationships I treasure from within the program," Sanders said. "I have turned down a lot of opportunities over the years because this is where I want to be. Minnesota Wrestling is what I'm passionate about."

During his tenure, he's helped nine wrestlers at 125, 133 and 141 lbs., earn 14 All-America honors. In addition, 28 wrestlers at those weight classes have qualified for the NCAA Championships, highlighted by Ethan Lizak's runner-up finish in 2017. Meanwhile, Chris Dardanes was Big Ten champion at 133 lbs., in 2015.

"Zach is one of the most accomplished wrestlers in state and program history," Eggum said. "He has been instrumental to our program during his 17 years as an athlete, mentor and volunteer coach. We are excited to reward his dedication and passion for Gopher Wrestling as we elevate him to assistant coach."

Sanders' time on the Minnesota staff comes after a highly successful career with the Golden Gophers. In 2012, Sanders became the seventh four-time All-American in Gopher history with a third-place finish in the 125-pound division at the NCAA Championships. He finished his career ranked sixth on the Gophers' all-time wins list with a record of 134-27.

Sanders was ranked as high as No. 1 nationally during his senior season. He was named Team MVP for the second year in a row after going 32-4. Sanders took second at the Big Ten Championships, his best finish following two consecutive third-place showings.

Sanders finished sixth at the NCAA Tournament as a freshman before finishing fifth his next two years. He was named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team and voted both Most Outstanding Freshman and Most Exciting Wrestler by his teammates in 2009. Sanders was also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree during his career.

Following the end of his senior season, Sanders competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling. Sanders has represented USA Wrestling abroad numerous times, including the 2019 World Cup. Sanders has qualified for the World Team Trials nearly 10 times in his career.
