Does Pitino survive this?

With his past history on players and now the video incident; coupled with the sexual harassment study , will another shoe drop? You have what looks like a two win season in conference play, apathy from the fans, ( one crowd of 12,000) and by father and son association, the mess in Louisville. You.can bet the Regents will be fielding phone calls from influencial alumni and probably women groups. Just me, but I think the S.S Pitino is sinking as we speak.

Rivals releases 2017 Minnesota rankings

Link: 2017 Minnesota Rankings
  1. Marshall tackle Blaise Andries
  2. Woodbury safety Nico Bolden
  3. Benilde-St. Margaret's guard Eric Wilson
  4. Robbinsdale Cooper lineman Eric Abojei
  5. Benilde-St. Margaret's running back Ricky Floyd

What are your thoughts? I talked about them each a little bit in the 2017 recruiting big board.

Andries is an animal. He's physical, has good height, and is punisher. He loves to finish blocks. His feet and mobility are power five-level as well. His Oregon, Oklahoma, and Nebraska offers are well deserved. I guess the only knock on him is that his wingspan isn't great for a guy his height.

I posted earlier today that Bolden is now being looked at by the staff as a safety and not outside linebacker. I could see him at either at the power five level, or start at safety and then move to linebacker as he adds weight. He's athletic, has decent straight-line speed, and moves well laterally. He plays instinctually and physically even if he's not really big enough for that to shine through yet. The missing part for him right now is his pad level, although you see a lot of power five players enter college needing a lot of work on that. You can read my full thoughts on Nico here.

Eric Wilson is a good athlete that has some explosion and moves well. He didn't dominate at camp in July but had a great fall.

Eric Abojei has great size and broke out this fall with Cooper. He has a good balance and base and is quick getting into his setup.

Ricky Floyd put up huge numbers this year for BSM. He has good but not great straight-line speed and is a natural tackle breaker. At 5'10", he's smaller than you'd like, but I could still see him going power five.

Are you lucky? I know I am

I know sometimes as Gopher fans, we get to feeling a little snakebit. The latest episode with the BB team sure doesn't help that feeling. So, I though I'd offer some perspective.
I'm 43 years old, and I've been riding horse since my old man set me on one when I was 2. Done some stupid stuff at stupid speeds. Been riding in rugged terrain, miles from the nearest human or vehicle countless times. Trained some horses. Had some hard falls, but nothing ever serious.

On Saturday, I was riding in our arena, 50 yards from our house, with the wife and 2 of the kids at home. Riding a young horse that needed some work. Had already spent close to 2 hours on her, tiring her out, trying to get the spook out of her so we could get to the point where I'd trust her with my 17 yr old son. Then, she bolted. I thought, no problem, I'll let her run it out. When she gets to the end of the arena, she'll just follow the corral fence around at a run until she gets tired. Then I'll run her a little more, teach her that it's good to slow down. No such luck.
She did what I didn't think any horse would ever do. Instead of turning at the fence, she slammed herself, full speed (some of you might know how fast a horse can go) into the steel corral. My right femur hit against the top rail. Snapped like a twig. I've since been told that the femur is the hardest bone in the human body to break, so think about that force. My momentum took me over the fence, where I fell and apparently landed on my head. Never lost consciousness, and gotta be honest, immediately screamed like a little girl. Wife called 911, and while waiting, I noticed some pain to right of base of my neck. Above shoulder blade. Paramedics pressed on vertebrae and asked about pain. It wasn't there, so they moved on. No neck collar. Got to ER where doc ordered a CT to go with the leg work. But leg need to get worked on, and CT scan got forgotten. Next day, when PT came up to see if I could use crutches, I got up, and when using them, was in extreme pain in neck area. They remembered the CT then, and over a day after the accident, we found out that I'd gone the entire time with a broken C6 and C7. Broken neck. And no collar the entire time.
I'm not telling this long-ass story to bitch about medical treatment, but rather, to point out how lucky we sometimes are.
All the time I've spent on horses, and the only bad accident happens right in front of my wife, close to town. Then despite all the moving around without a collar, with a broken neck, there is no damage to my spinal cord. None. That blows my mind.
So, I'm sitting here laid up for a while. Two surgeries, metal in both leg and neck. Collar for 3 months. And all I can think is how damn lucky I am. I have a wonderful wife and 3 great kids. And I can still hug them.

Count your blessings, boys. The rest of this stuff is fun, but its not everything

Gophers football in early on legacy recruit Demetrius Douglas

Demetrius-Douglas.jpg

The Gophers offered a scholarship to Demetrius Douglas in late February, but Minnesota’s best possible recruiter won’t be making a hard sell for the maroon and gold.

Instead of steering Douglas east to Minnesota in the 2017 class, his father, Omar Douglas, said he wants to just “provide advice and counsel throughout the process.”

Omar certainly has perspective to share after a four-year run playing for Minnesota from 1990-93. His name sits in the top 10 in Gophers records for career receptions (130), yards (1,681) and touchdowns (14). After graduating with a marketing degree, he played four years in the NFL as a backup with the New York Giants.

“You have that personal connection, but at the end of the day, it’s about him,” Omar told the Pioneer Press. “What is the right fit for him? Where does he want to go?”

As of Thursday night, his son’s most high-profile offer was from Oregon, about 110 miles south of the family home in Portland. The flashy school with countless Nike uniforms was in the College Football Playoff two years ago.

But Demetrius, a cornerback/wide receiver, grew up in Minnesota and was a freshman at Wayzata High School before his family moved west less than two years ago. Omar had a position at General Mills for seven years before accepting a new opportunity with Nike.

“It definitely still feels like home to me,” Demetrius said of Minnesota. “I still have family there. I still have friends there that I like to go back and visit.”

Demetrius attended a Gophers camp last summer, and in the past few weeks, other schools have offered scholarships, including Colorado State, Nevada, Howard and Yale.

“It definitely heated up quick,” Demetrius said. “It’s gotten kind of crazy, kind of overwhelming, but it’s been a cool experience so far.”

It’s just beginning. Ken Potter, his coach at Jesuit High School, said Pac-12 Conference schools such as Stanford, Washington and Oregon State have requested Demetrius’ academic transcripts. “That doesn’t correlate to an offer, but it does correlate to a lot of interest,” Potter said.

Demetrius isn’t in a rush to make a decision before national signing day next February. Come this fall, he’s not expected to come off the field much.

“He’s a lockdown corner that wants the challenge of taking on the team’s best receiver each week,” Potter said. “He has very good speed, and I just think he is getting faster and stronger every day with his work ethic.”

Demetrius missed about six games to start the season because of a lacerated kidney and helped win the state championship in December with a cast on his broken left hand. “He’s a very tough kid,” Potter said.

The busted hand has kept the 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete off the basketball team this season, but he plans to run track this spring.

Omar compares Demetrius to himself, but says he’s better.

“He’s a long, rangy type of player,” Omar said. “His wingspan is longer than you would expect for someone with his height. He is a smart player. He is a much better player than I was at that age, for certain. He has much better technique, and he is becoming a much better student of the game than I was at that point.”

Omar grew up in New Orleans before following the Mississippi River north to Minneapolis. He gives his son an edge in youthful passion, too.

“He loves the game,” Omar said. “I liked it in high school, and I grew to love it.”

In the 2016 recruiting class, the Gophers had 10 players with ties to Minnesota. For 2017, Minnesota has made inroads with Marshall offensive lineman Blaise Andries, the projected best player in the state, Douglas and others.

“As of right now, there is no order with schools,” Demetrius said. “It’s still very early, but (Minnesota) is definitely there. I’m definitely thinking about all my options. I look forward to coming down in the summer and visiting the school, talking to coaches and walking around campus and seeing how it feels for me.”

The Gophers hope it feels like home again.

The Rich get Richer

Dallas Cowboys are working with Frisco, TX to build a $300+ million practice facility. The 12,500 seat stadium will be used by Frisco HS and now the HS got a $1.74 million Nike uniform deal. The Cowboys have already sold out of memberships to watch the team practice and with that comes a $350 monthly gym bill. Just so happens to be the gym where the Cowboy cheerleaders will be working out there too

Northwestern knocks Gophers out of the NCAA

84-74 win. Banham picked a bad time to have a horrible game. Nia Coffey killed them. Gophers also rebounded very poorly. I think the jury is out on Stollings. One thing for sure she is not a defensive coach. You can't give up 80, 90, 100.points a game and expect win all the time. Banham did break the record of most points by a B1G Ten player as she past the 3,000 mark. On to the WNIT. No television
though unless the BTN covers it on some format.

Elevator Plan

Not the ones we want removed, but maybe its a start. There is a plan proposed for the Bunge Elevator at the end of Como near the campus. Instead of just tearing down the zero tax base and high liability wreck, the developer is trying to convert it to apartments. Modifying something like that far more expensive than greenfielding from the ground up. Certainly the reason for doing so would be to appease those who think everything should be preserved as you can see in the article and in the comments attached to it. Its going to be a mess to remove the elevators next to TCF now. If you have seen the plans to build on the current parking lots (tailgaters) you should pay attention to this.

Ryan James.......Do you think this is possible??

If a scholarship comes open from someone leaving, do you think the Gophers would consider giving a scholarship to Stephon Sharp instead of "banking it" for 2017?? I am not saying that it is what I prefer or do I think that the Gophers would prefer.. But, besides the tough assists-to-turnovers ratio(i know that is not fair as he was pressed into PG duty), his averages and percentages in the last 2 games would put him way ahead of most of our scholarship players.

He is scoring well, probably playing as good of defense as the higher rated freshman played earlier in the year, and the ball actually moves ok when he has been in the game. I think TALENT WISE, it would be better to have him stay as a walk-on so we could use the scholarship elsewhere, but if he plays well enough to earn a scholarship, I dont know if its the right thing to pass him over without offering, as a reward for his play.

SO, IF A SCHOLARSHIP BECOMES AVAILABLE, DO YOU THINK MINNESOTA OFFERS SHARP A SCHOLARSHIP IF HE CONTINUES TO PLAY WELL IN THE LAST FEW GAMES OF THE YEAR??? AS OPPOSED TO BANKING IT FOR 2017?

Contrast of TC Media Outlets Reporting Sex Tapes

I find it interesting how the Strib and Pioneer Press come at the story. Fuller from the PP breaks the news about the cell phone being stolen and that the Bloomington police are investigating it, giving the impression that there could be more to the story and that Dorsey's phone very well could have been taken and the video was posted by someone else. The Strib finally gets around to following up on the reported stolen phone a day later, but if you read the article it leans much more toward Dorsey's story not adding up and leaves the impression that there's something fishy going on. Additionally, you have Fuller in the PP write an article a couple days ago following up with the 3 recruits about the suspensions, and it was all positive and the guys weren't concerned at all about the issue. Now today on the Strib Amelia has an article that expresses concern for future recruit Coffey for what has happened.

Interesting to see contrast between the papers that are reporting on the same story.

Benedict Got His Wish...

Former Gopher Senior AAD David Benedict was named the new AD at Connecticut. He had been the CFO for Athletics at Auburn after he left the Gophers after 1+ years here. He told us several times in several different ways that his goal was to be an AD at a better D1 school & he is well on his way there. A lot of people who know the inner workings felt that Benedict was Mark Few to N. Teague's Dan Munson & was the one VCU import that knew how to get things done. I mostly agree with that line of thought..

Did we miss out on a potential candidate? In my opinion, no, not at this time for sure. I spent some time around David & appreciated his directness and pretty clear vision but his abrasive manner, lack of follow through along with a bit of arrogance did not always smooth his path with coaches, fans or donors. Perhaps he has rounded some of the sharp edges while at Auburn & good luck to him but I do not believe that he will be a candidate for a Minnesota job for a long, long time...

Gophers offer 2017 RB from Tampa Bay

Login to view embedded media Continuing in their recruiting sweep of the Tampa Bay Area in Florida, the Gophers have offered Erin Collins from Armwood High in Seffner, Fl.

Collins helped his team reach the state championship game last year. His team actually has played in three consecutive state title games in Florida. I've see this kid play. Very fast and nimble. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/4359476/erin-collins

(Ladies ... Quit Laughing! ) It just gets better as you get older, doesn't it?
I was in a Starbucks Coffee recently when my stomach started rumbling and I realized that I desperately needed to fart. The place was packed, but the music was really loud so to get relief and reduce embarrassment I timed my farts to the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel much better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me. I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my Ipod (with ear piece) - and how was your day?

Amir Coffey Notes

1.) Really nice to see him get in the Jordan Brand Classic. It's the next best thing to the McDonald's All American game. Many guys play in both. That's a big deal for him. He's earned it, was playing very well before he was hurt late in the year. Played well tonight.

2) Amir scored 28 points tonight and has his team playing in the state tournament next week. Big accomplishment for him. He's taken his team there twice and they went last year too although he was hurt. It will be a chance for Gopher fans to watch him on the big stage again. When he was a sophomore he had a tough time there so he will be motivated to go out on a strong note. And all of you can see him there against the best in state.

3) Looks like Amelia wrote an article during the game about Richard Coffey's feelings towards what is happening. Richard spoke of concern which any parent I think would. That said, based on what I know and what I have known, I have little to no concern about him wanting to go someplace else because of what has happened. Really can't go into detail other than saying despite what was written I still am not concerned about where Amir will be. Very confident he will be here even though this article may make some people concerned.

Wisconsin at Minnesota Game Thread

Game time is less than 8 hours away. I know a lot of the excitement is gone from the night but this is Joey King's senior day and he has given everything he has to the Gophers for three years so I hope people honor him well tonight.

I think the game will get ugly but the hope is Joey has a nice final showing. Story below and in that story is the Joey King tribute the U just posted.
