Do not worry about attendance

Do not worry about attendance. When Coach Fleck and staff start winning like crazy, the attendance figures will also start going crazy. Coach Fleck said things were going to get worse before getting better. Coach Fleck says he recruits 365 days per year. Recruiting is the most important factor in a winning college football program. Do you think recruiting has anything to do with Alabama’s success? It is going to be unbelievable in a few years how well the Gophers are playing. My biggest concern from day one of Coach Fleck’s hire is keeping Coach Fleck as the Gopher head coach for a very, very long time....like the next 30 years. The number of Big Ten titles, Final Fours and even a National Championship will be a beautiful thing!

A GREAT DEMONSTRATION OF GOPHER PRIDE...A BOWL GAME AND MORE PRACTICES THE REWARD

What a great game!!!! Fleck is the right man for this program.. A young team that is growing.. Extra practices that are so needed for our young team.. Smiles on faces of the coaches and players... Fans who have SACRIFICED money and time with a painstaking process of watching all these years.. PROUD TO BE A GOPHER, BABY!!!!!! Enjoying the moment.... Dont care what bowl it is because this is WAY BETTER than I thought possible without experience at key positions going into the year.. I about cried when I saw the guys celebrating on the sideline..... SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW.. SKI-U-MAH Gophers!!!

The Game

Buckeyes off to a promising start on both sides of the ball. 7-0

It’s not quite the same as Iowa or Wisconsin, but I’m all about Gopher history and say f^#% Michigan,

Also we got screwed out of the Jug in the 2015 game. Even before Limegrover’s epic goal line face plant, Leidner got body slammed by some Michigan player on a late hit. The ref immediately threw the flag.

Harbaugh went up to the ref and you could read his lips, ‘you can’t throw that flag’.

The official walked over, picked the flag up, and instead of 15 yards and a couple first downs to win it, we punt out of our own end zone and Michigan scores to go ahead.

I always want Michigan to lose (unless they’re playing Iowa or Wisconsin).

Potential Minnesota target note

I had a chance to watch a potential 2019 Minnesota target yesterday, Sammie Hunter a power forward from Texas. He got an offer a bit back after playing at Minnesota's team camp but things had been quiet for him after a not so great summer. He's turning things on as a senior and I won't be surprised to see the Gophers start poking around again with him.

Scroll down towards the bottom of this event report for some more notes on him.

Thoughts on Wisconsin

I've spent the past day watching bits of Wisconsin games other than the Purdue game (Mark and Nick had that covered). Here are my notes:

Offense

Wisconsin’s entire line is pretty solid. Right guard Ryan Bruss will be making his second start this season, and since I didn’t watch the Purdue game, I’m not familiar with him, but there weren’t any glaring weaknesses or guys getting consistently beat of the lineman I watched. Right tackle David Edwards is likely to be a high draft pick. Since Hornibrook is a lefty, Edwards protects his blindside. Left tackle Cole Van Lanen got away with a dozen holds when I watched...but are we really surprised?

Wisconsin will have receivers closer to their lineman than just about any team you’ll see and frequently have a fullback and tight end on the field at the same time. They’ll also use heavy sets with three tight ends or literally an extra lineman and a receiver to the field side.

Jonathan Taylor is a dude. He’s good. He’s patient, he’s fast, and he’s powerful. He changes speeds very well. Taiwan Deal is very good. He comes in with fresh legs to spell Jonathan Taylor.

Wisconsin runs mostly inside zone but will also run power and outside zone.

Wisconsin throws a lot of slants.

Fullback Alec Ingold is a great blocker and sometimes used to run or catch passes. He’s as effective of a fullback as you’ll see now-a-days. Tight end Kyle Pennison is more of a blocker and freshman tight end Jake Ferguson is more of a pass catcher.

Defense

Wisconsin runs a base 3-4 . The DT will either line up directly over the center or as a one-technique. The 3-4 looks a lot like a 5-2 and plays a lot like it too because the outside linebackers are frequently stand-up ends at the LOS that rarely drop into zone coverage.

On the backend, as Nick Falato wrote about, Wisconsin plays mostly Cover 1 with man-to-man underneath.

In obvious passing downs, Wisconsin usually plays nickel and only has two down lineman.

Wisconsin will usually rush four or five but rarely rush more than that. One of the edge rushers (the outside linebackers) will usually blitz.

The inside linebackers, Connelly and Nelson, will usually have one shoot the first read hard and the other wait until there’s a read he has to react to. I’m interested to see how this will work against an RPO team like Minnesota. The media has hyped up Connelly and Nelson as All-Big Ten First Team-level players. Hard to say that without watching the majority of Wisconsin's games, but they do seem to be pretty sound and make plays. Nelson was a First Team All-American last year.

Wisconsin will also have a down end sometimes drop into a delayed mid-zone. That’s something to watch and potentially an interception waiting to happen on RPO slants that Minnesota likes to run.

Jet sweeps were consistently effective for BYU against Wisconsin. Iowa also used a lot of jet motion against Wisconsin, which is kind of out of character for them.

BYU ran some trick plays. I'd expect trickery from the Gopher offense, as well.

I thought Olive Sagapolu was Wisconsin's best defensive lineman in the games I watched and actually wasn't super impressed with the rest of the defensive line. Sagapolu is out with an injury currently. It will be big if the Gophers can win at the line of scrimmage. I thought Iowa won at the LOS, and BYU held their own too. His backup is true freshman Bryson Williams, who has struggled like you'd expect from a true freshman.

Wisconsin's not a great pass rushing team. Vank Ginkel and Baun are both athletic and will get to the QB as outside linebackers in their 3-4 defense, but I wouldn't classify defensive ends Kayden Lyles, Matt Henningsen, or Isaiahh Loudermilk as great pass rushers. Wisconsin graduated their top three DEs last year, had a DE get hurt early in the year and miss the season, and Loudermilk was hurt early this season as well.

Wisconsin's started ten different players in the secondary this year and six of them started for the first time. They're likely to start two freshman at corner, Faion Hicks and Rachad Wildgoose. Hicks got beat several times in coverage when I watched.

D'Cota Dixon is the leader of the secondary and is a senior surrounded by freshman. He's the secondary's ringer on what is otherwise a not great position group. Dixon is also effective near the box but has mostly been needed in pass coverage given the group’s youth. He’s often the Cover 1 safety.I expect Bateman and Tyler Johnson to get separation against man coverage fairly consistently so long as Morgan has a mostly clean pocket, which I think can happen.

Player status updates

OJ Smith tweeted that he would be playing and then took down the tweet.

I would also expect Donnell Greene today.

We heard that Sam Schluetler and Royal Silver were not practicing mid or late week, so I would not expect them to play.

If a tackle goes down, we also expect Andries to slide to tackle and Dunlap to come in at guard.

Terell Smith is likely to play.

Rashod Bateman still has the flu but will play.

Football Paul Chryst pre-Minnesota presser

You watch Minnesota and what they’re doing offensively, you can see they’re running it well and running it physically. The quarterbacks give them chances to make plays and they have good receivers. We’ve seen a lot of their guys before defensively and they have good players. On special teams, you can see their athleticism.

It’s always tricky preparing for a new coordinator. We’ve tried to study the timing of their base defenses and get a feel for that. We’re going to keep studying it. In the last two weeks, in my opinion they’ve played two really good teams and played them really well.

Open to playing Jack Coan. Wouldn’t not play him just to preserve his redshirt. Jack’s on board for whatever this team needs.

Brought in former players to talk about the importance of this game. We talked about it every day this week.

I appreciate this rivalry and grew up around it. I have a ton of respect for the game and am thankful for the opportunity to coach in it.

My PJ Fleck thoughts

I’m going to start with a bang - PJ will WIN consistently here at Minnesota.

1. I think it’s taken a little longer than some expected but they are young and coming around because PJ knows what he is doing.
2. They will be B1G West contenders next year.
3. They will be B1G contenders in year 4.
4. His comments can rub people the wrong way sometimes - I would rather he just talks football instead of his culture and his standards lines. BUT when he wins here, people will like him better.
5. The balls he showed in firing his D Coord shows he knows what he is doing with managing a team. Everyone could see something wasnt right and he did what needed to be done. Not many coaches would do that.
6. Team GPA - amazing and I like that he cares about GPAs while also trying to win. I hope this doesn’t change.
7. I like that they do community service and are building men.
8. He knows how to recruit. If you can’t see the difference in level of recruits, then I’m sure you’re looking.
9. He has his QB of the future in Jacob Clark. You can win a lot of games with Clark.
10. He is the new age of coach that it takes to win, and the long time gopher fans just don’t understand that. When he wins like I think he will, these people will go away. I love long time fans (my dad) who talk about how to produce winning football but yet aren’t in the f*cking boat! Support for your coach helps crate a winning culture.
11. If I’m wrong I will admit it. I was a little suspicious because of my #1. But if I sit back and think about it. This is exactly where we should be. Bring culture year 1. Fighting for bowl game year 2. Fight for West year 3. Fight for B1G year 4.

Just had to get some things off my chest. Rant over!

The interview that never was.....

Flipping between the Apple Cup and Nevada playing U Mass ladt night in In the Vegas Tournament this thought occured.
We had a chance to hire Bud Wilkinson who went on to making Oklahoma a national power. When Bob Knight was at Army he was another one who got away because the AD at the time Marsh Ryman
kept him waiting in a hotel room. The Pirate Mike Leach was interested in the Gopher job when Maturi hired Brewster.
Eric Musselman was sitting in a San Diego
airport ready for a flight to Minnesota when Teague informed him he had hired
Pitino I watched Nevada completely dismantle a pretty good U Mass team last night 110-86. My lovely wife, who loves college basketball said: " My God they look like an NBA team" ( They start 5 seniors)
I will go to my death bed thinking what might have been in the long history of being a diehard Gopher fan. Maybe God will cut me some slack today and return the Axe to Minnesota.

California fires....

While Trump is in a pissing contest with the President of France, California North and South is in dire straits. Here's a thought President Muffley, why not take the15,000 troops you've on the border guarding kids with sippy cups and send them where they will do some good. Well
wait, it's California. I suppose if it was in Alabama and affecting the Robert Trent
Jones Trail you'd have the troops there plus FEMA.
