Jaquarius Landrews Recruiting Update: 12/1 -- UPDATED 12/4

Chatted with Jaquarius Landrews for a bit tonight about his in-home visit with Coach Claeys and Coach Sawvel today. He stated that “They were telling me they need somebody to replace (Damarius) Travis and they really need me up there. They said I’m a great person and I’m respectful and they need me up there. They said they are going to take care of me, they promised me they’re going to take care of me and I’m going to take their word."

Claeys and Sawvel also came to meet and visit Landrews' grandmother, who lives in Mississippi as well. When asked about how his grandma felt about him going away to Minnesota for college he told me “Whatever decision I make, she is proud of me. She is very comfortable with me going to Minnesota. She wants me to get out of Mississippi because there is nothing here. She knows I can handle myself on my own because I always handled myself on my own when I was younger. She just said she believes in me and she believes in Minnesota too.”

Landrews did confirm he is going to be officially visiting Mississippi State this weekend. When asked about the latest that the Bulldogs staff has been preaching to him, the three-star safety said “Mississippi State, they've just been telling me they want me to come in and play right away. But my heart is just with Minnesota right now.” On what would sway his commitment to Mississippi State over the Gophers: “I’m firm with Minnesota. I’ve been to Mississippi State plenty of times, and I don’t think anything is going to sway me from my commitment."

Landrews retweeted this tweet today as well, which stated that he will announce his final decision live on December 14th. Login to view embedded media
He confirmed this, saying “They want me to announce my official commitment and where I’m going to school at. They want me to go to Jackson (Mississippi) and announce my final decision in front of a crowd.” It will be shown live at www.hsfnetwork.com 13 days from today.

His final words for Gopher fans were: “I want to tell them I can’t wait to get up there any play and meet a whole bunch of fans and people up there. It is a very positive environment (in Minnesota) and I love that.”

Do we have bench scoring or scoring from our bigs??

I would think that a decent 'formula' for success this year for basketball is have Lynch, Murphy, and Curry get 25-30 points a game, combined... The rest of our scoring will be from Nate, Amir, Akeem, and Dupree, for the most part. I hope we can get 45-50 points a night from that group. Then play good defense so we can get wins.. I would think these are averages we will need this year, in conference play.

After those 7 players( yes I know that 2 of those will have to come off the bench so that is part of bench scoring). But last night, I was thinking to myself "Good grief, with Curry struggling and Murphy fouled out, we have all our scoring on the court and nothing on the bench." Gilbert?? Michael Hurt is still getting adjusted.. Bakary?? Maybe Fitzgerald would have provided that.

Do you think we will be ok with that scoring?? Looking forward, I think we will play 8 players most of the year unless Gilbert or Hurt plays much better.. Bakary has had good defensive moments but sets bad screens and isn't an offensive threat at all.. But he will play with the 7 guys above, out of need... Is that enough scoring to be competitive in the Big 10 this year??

WHERE IS OUR "HOMETOWN AIRLINE"

I'm just curious. Now that we know our Bowl destination is San Diego, why isn't our "hometown airline" (Sun Country) stepping up with a few charter planes? I know they are probably working with a few select travel agencies but what about the average Joe that just wants a cheap ticket to get out there? I've got to believe that at $250 R/T they'd sell out at least a few planes.

NJIT tomorrow for basketball

Based on record and opponents beat, NJIT seems like a 'yawner.... But in their lackluster season, they gave Purdue a tough time through the first half at West Lafayette. Other than that, nothing impressive to note as a team.

Their coach is Brian Kennedy, who is the nephew of Pat Kennedy who coached DePaul. Brian was on his uncle's staff there and his dad Bob Kennedy was a good coach at the prep level. I laughed at a friend who watches Purdue games and feels the same about Purdue as I do about Minnesota.. He watches future Purdue opponents as I had ZERO knowledge of the NJIt program other than they upset Michigan a few years ago. My friend is a huge basketball nut and I trust his judgement on players.. He saw highlights and shared some thoughts that I picked up and did a little more research and watching.

NJIT is in Newark, NJ and the vast majority of their team comes from within 10 miles of the campus. These are kids that WILL NOT be intimidated by anyone.. Got 3 kids from Bob Hurley's St Anthony's program in nearby Jersey City. These kids grew up together and played in parks together since they were young. When you get that familiarity, that always triggers a thought that these kids know each other well enough to give bigger squads a good game, and on a given night, who knows?? Their star is their PG/SG Damon Lynn, without a doubt. My friend has respect for the Gopher program and he told me that this kid could start for the Gophers. Again, I laughed until I saw him play. This kid can play, offensively.. He gets more than his share of steals. as well... His game has similarity to a Stephon Curry, in style, but more muscular though obviously not as good...This kid does not need much room to get off his shot and he will shoot it really deep as well as drive. EXTREMELY QUICK RELEASE OFF THE CATCH. Great FT shooter. He is the 'straw that stirs the drink' for them. A fun player to watch.

They got one of those St Anthony kids, Tim Coleman that is built strong at 6-4 and plays a good inside/outside game. I think he is their best rebounder and plays with good position and strength...They have a lot of role players at this point but if Lynn brings his "A" game, whoever guards him(Nate, Dupree, Springs, Coffey) will have their hands full. He is a really amazing catch-and-shoot kid. If Lynn would play at Minnesota, I honestly think after watching him that he would start for the Gophers. I hope that I am completely wrong and that the Gophers shut him down Thought it was just the competition level until I saw the game against Purdue. He is a legit D1 player though small.

I still think Minnesota wins this by double digits, but I don't expect this will be as easy as most fans would think.. We will dominate inside and have too much talent/athleticism for them but don't be surprised if they give the Gophers a game, in the first half. I don't think they have the horses to sustain that deep into the game, so I think a double digit win is inevitable for the Gophers.

A look at Washington State

I wanted to learn a little bit more on WSU, so pulled up the Spokane paper. Some good insight given from the Huskie/Cougar game where it sounds like the line play was one sided and that the receivers might have been intimidated a bit. Spokane paper leans towards WSU in this case, but a fairly neutral look here.

Team really exceeded the "gurus" pre-season picks

The Big Three pre-season national mags are Lindy's, Athlon and The Sporting News.

All 3 picked Minny to be 5th in the Big Ten West , end up 6-6- and 3-6 in the B10 and make a return to the Quick Lane Bowl. Lindy's also ranked the B10 teams 1-14 and had them at #12.

I was really shocked at the time, yet these mags "shock" most years. They all had Iowa #1 the B10 West.

Monday coaches on the road

As I posted a few days ago, Claeys, Sherels, and maybe Poore are in Texas tonight to visit with Bryson Jackson, who is certainly on commit watch. He's said that he wants to make a decision soon, that Minnesota is definitely his leader, and that it's possible he pulls the trigger tonight. Jackson's the top high school linebacker target.

Jay Johnson is in New Mexico to meet with Jordan Ta'amu. This comes on the heals of him picking up Minnesota and Ole Miss offers. My prediction remains that he's a Gopher since Ole Miss has talent at QB already as well as a couple targets that they may want more.

Jay Sawvel was in Michigan to visit with recent Iowa State decommit Jordan Ulmer. Remember that Ulmer visited Missouri last weekend and may visit Minnesota this weekend. Missouri feels like they'll get him, but I think Minnesota may feel the same way and the Gophers I think have been recruiting him longer.

Bart Miller and Dan O'Brien visited Eric Abojei today, and Eric tells me they just talked about official visit details for this weekend. Miller will be in Texas Wednesday to talk to Jimmie Terry.

Brian Anderson was at Highland CC to see defensive end Brandon Berry, defensive back Antonio Cole (Hudl), and possibly Colorado State WR commit Demarre Kitt. Berry should be a familiar name, as he's probably the biggest JUCO defensive end target right now. Cole was at one time a defensive back for Utah State. It's my understanding that after high school, he went to Northeast Oklahoma A&M, a JUCO, then went to Utah State, and was at Highland CC this year.

ESPN says.

National Funding Holiday Bowl: Minnesota vs. Washington State
(7 p.m., ESPN, Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, Calif.)
Both defenses are solid, but quarterback Luke Falk gives Washington State a major advantage over Minnesota, which simply hasn't seen the improvement it needed from veteran signal-caller Mitch Leidner. The Gophers hang around for a half before Falk and his wide receivers start stretching the field. Washington State 37, Minnesota 24.
I have to agree with this. Liedner has regressed the last three years. It's a joke he is getting compared to Randle El for rushing TD's. Everyone else does the work and he get the credit.
It's just stupid coaching that we don't have another QB ready to play when he throws all his ducks and interceptions.

Coach Tracy - Learn from Coach Pete

True to his long-standing reputation as having a trick play or two (infamous BSU vs Okl bowl game decade ago), the Huskies opened up against WSU in the Apple Cup with a flea flicker for huge gain. Leach said afterwards they were caught off-guard. Later in the game, another trick play was called and one of the brilliant announcers called-out Peterson for too many. Ok, let's get to 11-1 and worry about that. We have been burned in recent years by fake punts, Mizzo was big play in Citrus Bowl. Am I the only one that has surprised by TC's lack of calling for anything ever to shake a game up? Fake FG, fake punt, flea-flicker, etc. He ran the great half-back pass last year against IA, and it seems like nothing since. Play to win with house money, and a bowl game against WSU is just that. How much riskier is it than two runs on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 into 8 man boxes?

Boye Mafe update

Mafe tells me that he's still working out when his official visit will be, but Minnesota thinks they'll get him for a visit next weekend. Mafe is wanting to make a decision sooner rather than later, so you would hope that he'd finally pull the trigger next weekend, and I think he will.

Rutgers has also come on him strong recently and they're trying to set up an official visit with him as well.

Wonder why Minnesota is a tough place to work?

10 U officials got free access to MSFA suites at Vikings stadium

Don't really need to get into the politics of who else attended games in the suites,
but as far as the Athletic Department attendees...Minnesota will be hosting the Final Four along with 1st and 2nd Round games to work out the kinks in the years leading up to the Final Four. I would think they would be invited to see an event at the venue prior to the actual event. But I guess that makes too much sense. The naysayers will always have a field day on what should be a non issue.

Coaches, ADs or anyone else is open game for the media.
