Random Personnel Thoughts

Steven Richardson is really good.

Kiante Hardin is really good. In two years, when he and (I'm guessing) Durr are our CBs, we'll be comparing them to Murray/BBC and not being able to decide which set was better.

Antoine Winfield isn't there yet, but he's going to play on Sundays.

Two guys that don't get enough credit are Jack Lynn and Jonathan Celestin. They might not be all-conference or on anybody's watch list, but they are just good solid B1G LBs.

Speaking of LBs, whatever happened to Everett Williams?? Is he even still on the team (he's listed on the roster). If Poock and Rallis are both out we need a MLB against Nebraska. Lynn moves inside? Waters? Barber??

Welcome back, Eric Carter.

Carter and Still had some great blocks on Saturday.

We need another playmaker at WR. Gentry, Holland, Register, c'mon guys!

We really miss Lingen. As a security blanket for Leidner if nothing else.

The O-line has been frustratingly inconsistent. I'm starting to think Moore might be the problem. How about Weyler at center and Stieber or Oseland at guard? Or are they tackles?

Two other guys that don't get enough credit: Payton Jordahl and Jacob Herbers.

Does it feel to anyone else that Croft is the odd man out at QB? It seems like this year is Leidner/Rhoda and next year we start the Seth Green show. Or am I missing something?

TCF vs US Bank Stadium

I took in the Queens/Lions game Sunday and have been a season tix holder at TCF and the damn dome for years.

The Vikings stadium is amazing. TCF does not compare even though it is a wonderful facility and I am really glad we have it. We all know the dome sucked!!

I guess that there have been previous posts about the Queens new digs and comparisons to TCF but here are my observations.

For the record, I love the Gophers and put up with the Queens.

The Queens crowd is light years younger than TCF. Not even close. At the age of 71, I had to search for fans from my generation. And far more females in the crowd, which is a good thing and many of them really get into the game. Our section at TCF is ancient in comparison and mostly a buzz kill. The crowd in our section was fully engaged at USB and the cheers were solid. Skol! And the Skol Line (drums) is fun and played often. The Queens seem to have that going well and have tradition on their side. I thought the crowd was well behaved and I did not observe the drunken Viking fan syndrome that has been posted here in the past. The Gophers have been struggling with crowd engagement for a long time and haven't found the right combo. The UM marching band is mostly secondary to piped in music and commercials. I love the Gopher band pre-game which has been around for a long time. Vikings don't have that which is a disappointment. But the Queens vocal stuff is much better than the weak Skiumah chant and gets the crowd ready and engaged. Advantage to the Vikings and not even close.

The plaza and area around the USB is a buzz of activity compared to TCF. Granted there is more available space, but I counted at least three live bands and many tents. Even Fleet Farm had a tent where they encouraged fans to make their own signs and the Viking ship was a huge attraction. There was lots of energy outside of USB. Maturi did his best to put up some face painting booths and that was about it. Coyle needs to take in a Vikings game and see what the younger crowd enjoys. Advantage Vikings and not even close.

It seems as though the seating is much closer and lower to the field at TCF. Granted there are 18,000 more seats at US Bank. We were on the third level but it reminded me of our second levels seats at the damn dome which were higher than our second deck seats at TCF. Advantage Gophers.

Food and Beer. We had a brat which was OK but the bun must have came from the damn dome. Bad, really bad. The standard beer was basically domestic. Boo! We finally did find a stand that had lots of good choices including Surly Furious. $10 versus $11 at TCF! I thought I was at TCF!!! Small sample size but advantage TCF.

Sound. Really loud PA at USB and the announcer sounded like a robot. Bad. Really bad. I know its a dome but............TCF guy is much more animated, human and into the game. However the endless commercials and promo's at TCF is really aggrevating. Advantage TCF.

Seating. It looked as if all the seat at USB are chairbacks. However, our seats in 302 were not nearly a comfortable as our charibacks at TCF. Advantage TCF.

Access to stadium. USB is downtown so there is much more congestion. I took the Green Line from Surly's which worked very well both ways. No wait for the train back. We park and walk about 15 minutes to get to TCF which works well for us. For me it was equal but for others?????

Access. The concourse's at USB were crowded even 45 minutes prior to KO. Since the game went into OT, most of the crowd hung in there. Exit was congested compared to TCF. Huge advantage to TCF.

Bathroom. There was a line going into the mens during a 3rd quarter time out. Seldom experience that at TCF. Advantage TCF.

I boycotted going to Queen games at the damn dome back to the 80's and, like most of us here, put up with the Gophers playing there. I really enjoy TCF and love the Gophers. TCF is better than USB as far as convenience and view but the atmosphere and surrounds at USB is far better. I would go to another Queens game in a heartbeat! Now I fully understand why the Queens have much more fan support compared to the Gophers.

Armstrong Must Pass Concussion Protocol

From Omaha.com

It was good news that Armstrong appeared to be feeling well, Riley said, but he also acknowledged that would mean nothing until Armstrong was cleared by NU medical personnel.

“That’s what we have to wait for,” Riley said. “This is out of our hands, which is a good thing.”

Riley said he anticipated that Armstrong would not practice Tuesday, leaving fifth-year senior Ryker Fyfe to take the snaps with the No. 1 offense. Fyfe would make his second career start if Armstrong remains unavailable, with Zack Darlington becoming the backup.

“I’m really reluctant at this stage of the year to put Patrick O’Brien in that spot, just because I’d like to keep his redshirt if at all possible,” Riley said.

Although Riley would not speculate on when he thought Armstrong could potentially return, he put Thursday as the point where the Huskers would probably need to make a decision on whether he would be in position to play or not.

Coach Claeys… questioning

I rarely say anything bad about the Gophers but my frustration with Coach Claeys is off the charts. Points to make then will sit back and listen:

- Start with the end of the game… why did we not take a knee 3 times to run out the clock? Purdue was out of time outs. Without that we never get to Purdue driving and Rallis getting called for targeting. Seems completely unnecessary. And if we indeed need to get more points then why not go for 2 to make it a 14 point lead?

- The 4th Quarter pass interference BS call against the Gophers happened in the area near Claeys. He didn’t say a word to the official(s). Hands in the pocket and no emotion. I think he argued one or two of the many calls.

- You may be wondering why Coach is in the area… 95%+ of the time he is 40 yards from the line of scrimmage. For example, if Purdue has the ball on it’s own 20, Coach is on the Minnesota 35 yard line. Same goes for when Minnesota has the ball. He rarely talks with the players or other coaches. He had the headset around his neck but I only saw him wear it a time or two.

I get that teams and coaches have different styles but this seems very odd to me.

I’ll stop here… what am I missing?

Depth chart for Nebraska

The depth chart that will no doubt change:

As always click on the image to expand it, if needed.

Brooks is on the depth chart, which almost always means he's practicing as of today. The way I interpreted what I heard about his injury is that he's had a hip flexor that's been nagging him a while so I was afraid he might be out several weeks. If he's on the depth chart, that's great news.

Elmore starting over DeLattiboudere.

Eric Carter and Tyler Johnson listed as co-starters. Mayer listed as backing up Woli.

Vincent Calhoun and Garrison Wright listed as co-starters.

What's holding defense back from being elite?

what do you guys believe is the biggest need for upgrade that will take our D to another level. Seems like Claeys has been able to field a quality defense year after year which I'm sure we all appreciate, but I've never classified them as elite. When watching Wisconsin, I see a dominant defense and it has me wondering what are the missing pieces to get there? Is it a stud DE? Interior? Elite LB's? Scheme?

Nebraska

Gophs have won two of last three.

They are coming off two emotional, physical losses to Bucky and Buckeyes.

4 Big Ten wins: @NW 24-13, IL 31-16, @IN 27-22, Purdue 27-14 (was down to Boilers 14-10 at half).

3 pt non-con win vs Oregon doesn't look as good with Oregon now 1-5 in PAC.

Last year, Newby, Martinez, Pierson El, the TE Carter had good plays. They won the battle up front, running for 203.

Gophs ran for 271 and 285 vs Huskers in 13 and 14. 65 last year.

I think our running game and run defense is in better shape this year.

We gave up big punt return last year, got no turnovers, turned it over 3 times.

I hope we continue solid protect the ball/get ball trend.

Season starts Friday!

with the hoops season officially underway on Friday here are some things to look for.

1. Starting lineup.

- I personally would go Mason, springs, Coffey, Murphy, and lynch. Bring mcbrayer off the bench To lift you with some scoring if needed as well as curry getting in the mix early. I also think Hurt definitely has a role on this team as well as Konate given the opponent and matchups

2. Ball movement. If this team can move the ball better and use poor close outs to get into the lane I think this team will be fine offensively. They can't afford to settle this year. Get to the paint! That will open up outside shots and I think we will have no problem getting to the free throw line but will we make them?

3. Defense. Let's get back to picking up full court and putting pressure on the other team by speeding up decisions. We have not proven to be a great half court defense. This can lead to easier buckets as well for us on offensive end

4. Fouling. The gophers have never been great at keeping fouling under control with Pitino at the helm. Foul trouble is always an issue as well as poor fouls in situations that give other team offense or bail outs. Wis is a great example of a team who makes you beat them. There will be fouls but let's make sure we adjust to the officiating

5. I expect us to be a much much better rebounding team both off and defensively. This in theory should lead to less points for them and more points for us.

This year we need to stop talking about the turn around and where this program is going and do something about it. Bring some excitement and winning back to that barn and get momentum back in this program!!! It all starts on Friday
