There appears to be no real excitement

And I guess I fall into that camp, too. It's more of a wait and see approach for me right now.

4-2 is pretty solid for in conference and most years that would be cause for great excitement coming down the stretch. But I just don't think this team is for real. Even being "relevant" this time of year and getting national mentions as West contenders doesn't feel right.

Here's to hoping the team plays big on Saturday and gives us some tangible reasons to feel good about them!

Bravo to OKWU President

Whether you are a conservative, liberal or independent;. I urge you to read this letter. It was written by the president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University after a soft student complained a sermon. To me, this student represents a part of the problem in this country and what Trump struck a cord with with his non PC speeches.

Riley doesn't expect offense to be limited at all if Armstrong plays

From Lincoln Journal Star. The link has an injury report in there also.

Riley said he appreciates the procedures in place nowadays in dealing with all injuries.

"When somebody is considered hurt, they're given to the trainer, and then the trainer and the doctor do what they do and we don't even talk about it until they give them back to us 100 percent. So if he is able to play, he is healthy."

That means if Armstrong does play, don't expect the offense to be limited in any way.

"We're talking about a guy we've been with for about a year-and-three-quarters, and he's been able to stay up on the game plan during the week, even though not practicing," Riley said. "And then (he's) getting some work Thursday, getting some work Friday. As many games as he's had, I'm not really worried about that."

J. Johnson vs. Leidner

Stating the obvious here, but there's been a lot of frustration with the fan base over these two and I'm wondering what your thoughts are their performance to date. Maybe the chicken and egg argument about their performances? Leidner maybe not performing as well due to how Johnson is game calling? Conversely, is Johnson handcuffed with his playbook because of what he believes Leidner is capable of doing? I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic. I've had some frustration with Johnson's game plans a couple times this year, however I'm beginning to think that the QB, his style, and his overall play may be dictating some of Johnson's head scratching play calls or game plans. I don't know, could be off, but interested to hear what others think.

To Johnson's credit, we're at 33 points per game which is a huge jump from last year.

Trouble in Madison

I just saw and article on ESPN about the black athletes over there are not getting treated very good. At the last game three people showed up, one dressed like Obama, and one like Hilary with a noose around their neck and someone dressed like Trump holding the noose.
In reality I would hope something like this would never happen here. And if it did happen, I would hope the fans would take care of the problem in a hurry.
It's hard for me to believe this attitude still exists in our country. This is not the 50's and 60's.
Maybe it does over in redneck Madison, especially after a 12 pack.

50 Years and 5 Coaches Got Teams to 7-2 or Better

After watching every game, this isn't a great team or even very good team. That while 7-2 was a very solid start it had to be rare. The Gophers had been pretty bad over the last 50 years, just wasn't sure how often Minnesota had gotten to 7-2.

Turns out for the Gophers to be 7-2 is quite an accomplishment. It's happened only 6 times since 1967, with 5 of them coming since 2002. Looked it up quickly so I may have missed a team. Scheduling, as we've heard many, many times, has certainly been part of this year's record, and Claeys hasn't beat a ranked team yet. He gets his opportunity for that on Saturday. He may get 2 more shots after that. None of those things are unique to the very few 7-2 (or better) Gopher teams.

Scheduling was also a huge part for Mason's teams. He had very forgiving Non-Conference schedules. 2002 he played SW Texas State, LA-Lafyette, Toledo and Buffalo. 2003 got him Tulsa, Troy State, Ohio and again, LA-Lafyette. He lost to 6 out of 7 ranked teams he played in those seasons.

Scheduling got Brewster's team to 7-2. His Non-Conference opponents were NIU, Bowling Green, Montana State and Florida Atlantic. He beat #25 Purdue, but lost to #14 tOSU and #20 NW.

Kill's 2013 team had much the same story. He played UNLV, New Mexico State, Western Illinois and San Jose State in his Non-Conference schedule. Jerry played 4 ranked teams that season and got 1 victory to show for it.

2014 saw Kill beat EIU, Middle TN State and San Jose. He lost to TCU. He went 1-3 against ranked teams.

The common denominator seems to be that even in those good seasons, 1967 & 2003 aside, they all ended very badly. Guessing it was usually due to the schedule and a lack of depth.

2014 - 7-2 and then they went 1-3 to end the year at 8-5. lost to #8 tOSU, #14 WI and #16 MO. Beat #21 NE.

2013 - started at 8-2, then lost all 3 of their last games.Lost to #17 MI, #17 WI and #11 MSU. Beat #21 NE.

2008 - 7-1, then lost their last 5. Beat one ranked team #25 Purdue lost to #14 tOSU and #20 NW.

2003 - 9-2 (1!), split their last 2, beating Oregon in the Sun Bowl. Lost to all 3 ranked teams he faced.

2002 - 7-2 , then lost 4 out of their last 5 before beating #25 Arkansas in the Music City Bowl. Only ranked team they beat. Lost to tOSU, MI and Iowa.

1967 - 9-2, with a season ending victory at Wisconsin. Murray played 1 ranked team that year. Nebraska beat him 7-0 in Lincoln.

Warmath aside, Claeys is following a pattern for Gopher teams to get to 7-2. Get a weak Non-Conference schedule. Though certainly no weaker than the other 3 guys had and he only had a chance to get 3 victories out of it, not 4. The other element is to beat the teams you should.

Only 6 teams were able to put those things together in the last 50 years.

That said, Tracy had zero head coaching experience before Minnesota. That means he has no track record coming in, much like Gutey and Brewster. He has made some head-shaking decisons. He hasn't out recruited many teams and it's pretty doubtful he's brought many big donor checks in either. He also doesn't have the right "look" if you listen to all the shots taken about this weight.

His contract is set-up some can be fired after this season without costing the U much money. If he loses 3 of the next 4 that would be pretty easy to do, and hard to argue against.

Coyle would be an idiot to fire a guy who finished 11-2 or 10-3. Particularly if that meant they beat Bucky and/or played for the Big Ten Championship. Now what if he loses all 4 and the team looks bad doing it?

He's probably and rightly gone.

Historically at least, it's been a very good year so far, no matter how it "feels". There, however, are a whole bunch of ways it could end.

Tuesday Gopher Presser Live

Mitch Leidner:
  • Remembers how big the win at Nebraska in 2014 was
  • Atmosphere in Lincoln is awesome. Crowd was smart with noise
  • With Lingen out, important for everyone to get better every week.
  • Most audibles are plays for the running backs, not for himself to run
  • Thinks Nebraska will bounce back from loss to Ohio State. They'll be ready
  • Need to keep getting more comfortable with the cadence to stop pre-snap penalties
  • They know what opportunity is in front of them, but it isn't really talked about.
  • Knowing they have won in Lincoln before brings a bit of confidence
  • Converting on third down has been an emphasis in practice
  • Good to see Carter and Still get separation on deep balls. They played a physical game
  • Can feel the confidence building in practice every day
  • Iowa game will always eat at him, but everyone's done a good job bouncing back
  • Worked with Armstrong a little this summer, looks forward to playing him this week
  • Not a lot of QB's can say they've won at a place like Nebraska, a chance to get a 2nd would be huge

Purdue Game Officiating

I know it is a reoccurring theme here, but we get no home field advantage when it comes to officiating, even against a team like Purdue. For instance, we have an offensive pass interference call against us. The penalty is against Beebe, who is no where near where the ball is thrown. On the next series, the Purdue receiver tackles our DB knocking his shoe off to prevent an interception. And guess what, no flag. Then, there is the Purdue throw to the end zone that is 15 feet over the head of the Purdue WR receiver and a yard from the back of the end zone. There was hand fighting on the play, but regardless that ball was not going to caught. Here comes the flag. A couple of series later, on a key third down, Leidner throws to our WR and the Purdue DB has his arm wrapped around the receiver way prior to the throw arriving preventing the catch. Despite there being two refs there, again a no call. There was just no consistency in the officiating, and it seemed like all the calls / no calls went Purdue's way. Do not even get me started about the targeting call against Rallis.
