Mike and Darrell

Said thy both felt better about the team after the win today. Maybe they saw something else. Darrell did say he has concerns about the LB and secondary. I thought the defense was terrible today. LBs were MAC level being generous and Dbs were FCS. This will not work starting next week. Talk me off the ledge.

We have now beaten 2 bad (B1G standards) teams by one score each.

Positives include nice job by Mitch and offensive skill players. Kicking game is solid.

Misc. The CSU kickoff was OB and the refs blew the call. We had a perfect angle.

Focus and mental preparation will determine if we win or lose next week

People are talking about Wisconsin destroying Michigan State in East Lansing. 2nd win against top level competition on the year.. Impressive, right?? Well, they struggled with a 0-3 team in Camp Randall that had been destroyed by Air Force the week before they gave the Badgers a great game. Focus and mental preparation were determining factors in the Badgers' win yesterday. Did not have that same focus in the Georgia State game. Ball control, winning the turnover battle, executing on 3rd downs were keys in beating Michigan State...

Minnesota, as a team, has the athletic ability, for sure.. We were NOT focused on defense yesterday which made the game closer than it should have been.. The good news is that it can change quickly.. Just like Wisconsin's difference between the Georgia State and Michigan State game... No way Georgia State is better than Michigan State yet Wisconsin played so much better against the Spartans. Minnesota can do the same against Penn State.

I see little things that have to be dealt with for next week.. This will be the first AWAY game for the Gopher freshmen in one of the largest and loudest stadiums in the nation. More a mental thing than anything else.. Gotta get them laser focused on their job, as individuals and as a team. Gotta get to our gaps and reads on defense and get there quickly. Hesitation or overpursuit for a quick second is the difference between stopped at the line of scrimmage and giving the opponent a 25 yard gain. Execution will be key. We are strong in running the ball which shortens the game and controls the clock... It is key that we succeed with our really talented RBs... Defense has to get the 3 and outs.. We can do this and come out of Happy Valley with a win and a 4-0 start!!

Dumb penalties

We have to quit making all these dumb penalties, because it's going to catch up to us now that we're in the BIG. This usually comes from the coaches not getting on the players, and they keep doing it.
How many times do we need to be called for the OL called for early motion before they fix this?
We can't keep giving he other teams all these free yards. Myrick was shooting his mouth off more than once and got flagged for it in the fourth quarter and they moved the ball half the distance to the goal, and CS scored a short time later.
Good and well coached teams don't make all these penalties.

A lot of locals are here, as always. Official visitors are Jaquarius Landrews and Kendrick Green. Two biggest unofficial visitors are Boye Mafe and Trey Lance.

Vincent Calhoun is not dressed for today's game. I believe he has a chronic knee issue. Jared Weyler I'm guessing will get the start now.

Duke McGhee is practicing with the first team right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the start over Kunle.

The Seahawks, Rams, Lions, and Packers will all be here, as will two representatives from the Orange Bowl.

Official CSU vs Gophers game recap

Dear all of my Gopher brethen and sistren,

I give to you TNM's first official Gopher football game recap!

The Gophers won 31 to 24.

That's what I'm talking about. It was one of those games that wasn't a blow out but very solid indications to the future. Many things occurred that many of us have not truly witnessed in several decade. Read and watch everything else to find out what they were.

That puts us at 3-0 on the 2016 college football season. A small teaching of the feelings of being undefeated. Their hard work and commitment has paid dividends in the win column. Ticket sales and concession sales were solid. Parking sales was solid. Viewership was solid.

We can all as a total unit breath the air of being undefeated. Their is a freshness to it. A solid oder of decency in this great state known as Minnesota.

The national championship is a few months away ladies and gentleman. Will this team fulfill the mission? It remains to be seen!

Love,

TNM

Penn State is already down all 3 starters at LB,

And they lost one LB during this game for targeting, and another just came out of the game after an injury that had him laid out on the turf for a good 5+ minutes.

Penn State is down 28-0 and it isn't even halftime.

Today the Skunks and Sparty showed that CFB teams can look very different from week to week. The good teams get better as the season progresses and they find ways to win even on days when they can't get out of their own way---The Gophers hurt themselves with penalties and poor defensive plays on 3rd down.

Sloppy looking uniforms.

I'm happy to be 3-0, but man, today's uniform combo of gold tops with maroon pants and helmets (not my favorite to start with), were made ridiculously sloppy looking with all the white t-shirts hanging out, white undersleeves, and white "leggings"/long underwear. C'mon coaching staff, get the team to at least look like champions. If the players need to wear all the additional undergarments, at least have them all wear matching ones, and in gold or maroon, not white. Who knows, maybe looking good will rub off on playing better.

Main points from postgame presser

Tracy Claeys
  • Pleased with the offense. Always find an answer and a way to score in the second half.
  • Defense not where it needs to be going into Big Ten play. Run defense and defending screens need to improve.
  • Didn't play well but finished. "We'll never complain about winning."
  • Devers is not big enough to defend the run. He'll continue to get a lot of playing time on passing downs.
  • Not commenting on suspensions.
  • Praised Leidner, said he's a big reason they've had success.
  • Thought Vincent Calhoun (toe) would play but decided to hold him out so he's 100% for Big Ten play.
  • There should have been someone in the middle of the field to stop the fake punt pass.
  • Defensive line played well, linebackers and defensive backs need to be better.
Damarius Travis
  • Taiyon has really good coming off the edge.
  • Teams are going to run screens on because they've had success doing so. Need to practice that.
  • Defense has more speed than in past years because of playing with more linebackers.
  • Exits the podium by saying he's the real #7. Mitch responds by saying his locker number is 7 and that Damarius' is 122.
Mitch Leidner
  • Need to clean penalties up but mostly content with the offense going into Penn State.
  • Jay Johnson said defender made a good play on the interception. Mitch couldn't see it and will have to rewatch the film.
  • Johnson's offense does really well with intermediate, 15-20 yard routes.
  • This is the first time he's been healthy coming out of nonconference play.
  • Gave the running backs a hard time about his juke move.
Shannon Brooks
  • Asked Leidner if he was wearing his "Like Mike" cleats after Leidner's first half juke.
  • Don't need too much therapy because his foot is "pretty much healed." Just ice it every now and then.
Rodney Smith
  • Good feeling in the huddle knowing how many playmakers there are.
  • Worked extremely hard in the offseason on pass protection as running backs. Pat Poore was told by someone that the running backs didn't pass block well, and that was taken personally.
