Tennessee fires Butch Jones

FWIW the Gruden rumors are likely false but it's funny that his name keeps coming up for college football head coach searches.

Brady Hoke will be interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Let the Scott Frost coaching rumors continue.....Florida, Nebraska(inevitable) and Tennessee. There will probably be requests for Peyton Manning(even though he has never coached) and all kinds of crazy rumors in Knoxville.. Justin Fuente.. Mike Norvell.. Who knows???

The guy that I would look at if I was Tennessee is former assistant Dave Clawson, who is at Wake Forest..He was a former Volunteer assistant under Phil Fulmer. I feel he is an underrated coach at a program that is going to always have it tough...Dont think the Volunteers will go that route with the "flavor of the day" mentality out there, but Clawson is a good coach.

Don't see them going that route. SEC school and still a very good job iyam. Should have their sights set higher than a head coach who is 19-28 in his career at a p5 school and just barely over .500 overall. The guy has basically been a .500 or worse coach everywhere he's been outside of one really good year at Richmond.

I think a Dan Mullen type would be a great hire for them if they could pry him away from Miss St. Norvell would be a good fit I think, maybe a guy like Neal Brown. I'm sure Les Miles name will get in the rumors as well. There will be lots of names flying around but would be surprised if they had to settle for a guy like Clawson with such a poor record.

I would counter that with saying he had some really tough situations at all those schools.... If you notice, those teams improved... He was here at Bowling Green and thought he did a great job... Was 10-3 his last year but did not coach the bowl game as he accepted the new head coaching position.

I would NOT argue against the fact that Fuente and Norvell might be better candidates.... Plus a negative for Clawson was that his offense sputtered when hired at Tennessee but I would suggest it was factors out of his control(Staff turmoil and off the field stuff)...But I think he has coached at almost impossible programs to be a traditional winner... Your facts are true on being a .500 coach at Fordham, RIchmond, BGSU, and Wake Forest but again, I think Clawson is a better coach than people give him credit and more behind the records that he was not in control.

I'm not arguing that he isn't a good coach just think they want to go with a name that will impress nationally and for recruiting purposes, Clawson isn't that guy. I'd be surprised if he were to even be realistically rumored for that job.

I love following the teams of coaches who could be targets for bigger programs.

This is my opinion but this is the weakest group of potential hires in a number of years.

After Scott Frost, it's difficult to find guys outside the Power 5 conferences that teams should be really excited about.

Power 5 coaches certainly can change teams but that doesn't happen a ton. Maybe one or two per year.

Somebody in the Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska trio is probably going to end up pretty disappointed.

Definitely disagree here. Norvell, Neal Brown, Charlie Strong, Chad Morris, Bryan Harsin, Scott Satterfield, Jason Candle, Frank Wilson, Ken Niumatalolo, Troy Calhoun.... Pretty much all of these guys would be good P5 coaches. Thats not even including guys like Chip Kelly and Les Miles who could come back to coaching or great coordinators who could make the jump. I think this is a great time to be hiring for a coach

No doubt there are probably some correct answers in there but historically if you are hiring someone from a non Power 5 situation they need to be damn near perfect outside the Power 5.

Outside of Frost, almost none of those guys have a dominant team or a clear super strength that should translate to a higher level.

It all starts with Frost. If he picks Florida (which be more logical), then NE has to decide which direction they go. Tennessee did the non P5 with Butch, I think the TN fans want a name more than anything else. Just IMHO. Living in FL, gator fans are looking for another Urban Meyer. A offensive minded guru with strong recruiting ability.

You mean like Chip Kelly?

Tennessee Commit Says Butch Jones Told Him 'Find a Place to Go, Quickly'

Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones has reached out to an incoming recruit and told him to find another school, according to Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel.

Tanner Ingle has been committed to Tennessee since June 19, but now that Jones has been fired according to SI.com's Bruce Feldman, he is looking at other schools, although he is remaining committed to the Volunteers, according to the Sentinel.

"I spoke with coach Jones about 30 minutes ago," the defensive back from Orlando Dr. Phillips said around 12:30 p.m. EST Sunday, according to the Sentinel. "He said he didn't really expect that to happen, but it did so he told me to find a place to go, quickly ... and that if he gets anything, he will contact me."

Ingle said he will take an official visit to NC State and possibly Virginia Tech as well, according to the Sentinel.

Tennessee fired Jones after Saturday's loss to Missouri brought the team to 0-6 in SEC play for this season. During his five seasons at Tennessee he went 34-27 overall.

Who is the poster on here that was obsessed with Brady Hoke for the Gopher's HC?

Patterson, Petersen, Harbaugh, and Sumlin huh? We must not have offered $9 million to Harbaugh.

There was a Larry Fedora sighting in Dinkytown that never happened, Al Golden was supposed to be arranging travel. Then Peterson was hired and called a team meeting. Randy Edsall was floating around throughout the process too.

Best of all was the report that Maturi was watching the MAC championship on a small TV at another event at the Pav or Williams. We now know Maturi called Kill almost immediately after that game and the rest was history.

Suffice it to say that many on this board were not pleased with the Kill hire.

I wasn't pleased with it after all the "Tubby-type hire" talk, but was pleased with what he accomplished after the Brewster disaster.

My most memorable highlights were 1) when the former GI football reporter and undersized local media legend (no, not that one) stated that there were two candidates for the open coaching position on campus at the same time, and 2) when a local GI T. Boone Pickens who had recently lost his pipeline was set to announce that Randy Edsall had been hired which was almost his second "Dewey Wins" moment in two consecutive coaching searches.

The only thing you could count on is that it is always sunny in Minneapolis...

Shocky Jacque-Louis just de committed. IIRC we were in on him late. This time of the year will be a good litmus test to gauge our commitment to current committed kids

I hear they have reached out to Gruden, Mullen, and Gundy. The Gruden rumors are always going to be there, and it is floating around today that he is calling former assistants to gauge their interest. I do believe they will spend mega-bucks this time to make a splash.

That’s intriguing. Seemed to me like Gruden* was content to be in the booth and away from the long hours and grind of coaching. But maybe he’s ready to return?

Can’t imagine why Gundy would leave Okie State. At this point imo it’s as good or better a job than Tennessee. The state of Tennessee has arguably the worst in state recruiting in th SEC.

At Okie State Gundy gets to easily recruit both Oklahoma and Texas, plus he’s got T. Boone Pickens.

Several years back he was within one fluky loss of a national title bid and likely win over LSU.

He’s got a top 10ish team almost every year and is usually in the hunt for the Big 12 title and more.

IN addition to Ole Miss, FL, TN and NE, we will probably have openings at aTm and Arkansas for name programs. Lesser programs like AZ and ASU will probably make changes too.

Chip Kelly would fit best at Florida, but they want Frost. Not sure he is a fit at any others, maybe one of the AZ schools finds some coin

Venables, the OC for Clemson, is getting mentioned for TN and Arky. I would think TN wants more of a proven coach

Les Miles will get a job, would Arky take him or how about Ole Miss?

Would Petrino get any sniffs? Or does he bring too much baggage with him?

Does Mullen risk being stoned to death by moving to another SEC school?

Justin Fuente, would he leave VTech for TN or aTm?

Has Brohm shown enough in year 1 at Purdue to take the next step? I think he is 2 years away.

Matt Campbell at IA St would be a great get for any of these teams. If I'm TN, he is one of my top 3

Mike Norvell is winning with Fuentes recruits, can he sustain a program? Maybe an AZ team comes knocking

Charlie Strong was bad at Texas, but very good elsewhere. He has recruited well and had great defenses in the SEC. A bit of a gamble, but is still young and could be a high reward for some school willing to roll the dice.

Neal Brown, HC at Troy, made a name for himself by beating LSU. A spread O disciple, his offenses are fun to watch. Can he recruit at a top level?

Jason Candle, Toledo, is the next hot name from the MAC. Not a big enough name for the top schools, but should get interest from Arky, Ole Miss and the lesser FL schools if they lose their HC

Lane Kiffin, I would love to see him back in the SEC. He is polarizing, but I believe he has learned a lot and is a good coach. No way would TN touch him, would Arky, Ole Miss or Miss St if they lose Mullen?

Frank Wilson, HC at UTSA, has build them into a very solid team.

Joe Moorhead, OC from Penn St, is a NE guy and no ties to the south where all the opening are. Maybe someone like Ole Miss or Arky would gamble.

Chad Morris, HC at SMU, used to run Dabo's offense and is a TX guy. He is a very active recruiter and SMU has won some battles against some pretty good teams in recruiting. He hasn't done very well at SMU and would not be a sexy hire

1) Totally agree Frost goes to Florida. Will be hilarious to see Sherm’s reaction when he’s proven wrong and can no longer claim that ‘Minnesota won’t beat Nebraska again ever because omg Scott Frost, lol’*

*that’s a direct Sherman quote :D**

2) IMO, Chip Kelly makes a lot of sense at Arkansas. Arkansas was in perennial contention under Bobby Petrino with a wide open, explosive offense.

Then after Arkansas was forced to fire Petrino, they hired Bielema and tried to out Saban Nick Saban—hasn’t worked out well.

Methinks the Razorbacks will go back to a coach with a high scoring spread
offense. Chip Kelly fits the bill.

**isn’t Sherman just sad? Can you imagine wasting all your time trolling a board of a team you quite obviously want to see lose? #Sad
