One thing about Urban...He puts it to teams led by former assistants

Beating Maryland 45-3 at half. Team led by DJ Durkin, who played for Urban at Bowling Green and was on his staff at Florida.... Destroyed Rutgers led by Chris Ash, who was a Buckeye assistant. Tim Beckman's groups got killed at Illinois when they played the Buckeyes.

Granted, those former assistants took over programs that were just flat bad so that is in consideration but you will see Urban put up the ball often enough when he has huge leads. Definitely wants to show that the teacher is still in charge of the former students,

I am sure that other people are thinking that 'blood is in the water' here for the Buckeyes as Clemson has their hands full with Pitt and Washington will have a tough time stopping USC and that offense, who is surging so 2 of the the top 4 teams may change by Monday.

Coach's Corner with Brandon Eggum and Wrestling signs 3 commits

Interim HC Brandon Eggum did an interesting interview in this week's "Coach's Corner".

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/111116aaa.html

Eggum said that Brandon Kingsley got injured at the Daktronics Open last weekend and may be out until the SDSU dual next weekend. He said that Tommy Thorn missed the Daktronics with a strained knee that may keep him out of the Harold Nichols Open at ISU this weekend. (It looks like the 4 wrestlers who are suspended until Jan. 1st can't wrestle in regular tournaments or dual meets, but can compete in "Non-starter" tournaments like the Harold Nichols Open this weekend at ISU). And Eggum said that Bobby Steveson was almost down to 184#s last weekend when he wrestled at 197...he will be at 184 this weekend at the Journeymen Open in NY. Finally, he said that elite true Freshman Mitch McKee did very well last weekend and after some more discussions with Mitch, they will be pulling his redshirt, so he will start at 133 this year. McKee thinks he can compete against the best, and he is very good! So, this will be interesting to watch. The coaching staff has assigned Assistant Coach Dustin Schlatter to help mentor McKee. Schlatter was a 149# National Champ as a true freshman, so his experience may be helpful to Mitch.

Eggum said that he had dinner this week with some big donors who may want to fund the improvement of our wrestling club The Minnesota Storm. If we are to get back to the very top of D1 Wrestling, we need to have a club that operates at a very elite level in Freestyle. Eggum says that along with our new wrestling facilities coming up in the near future, he is encouraged that he may be able to get some big donors to fund the freestyle program. That will really help our recruiting of elite high school wrestlers.

Eggum said that recruiting was difficult lately with all the uncertainty that the program had this past year. He is pleased that we signed several good instate recruits and that the future will be much better.

Here's an article on the three new 2017 instate signees:

Gophers Sign Three In-State Recruits

Minnesota officially adds a trio of Minnesota high schoolers to its 2017 recruiting class

The Gopher Wrestling program added three new, in-state recruits on Tuesday with Brent Jones, Jakob Bergeland and Alex Crowe signing their National Letters of Intent, officially committing them to wrestle at the University of Minnesota.

“When we are recruiting, the thing we’re looking to do is find the right types of people and these three are hard-working, they’re good wrestlers and they’re great students,” said head coach Brandon Eggum. “They’re also outstanding competitors. They’re also just good kids from good families. Those things are important to us.”

Jones, a three-time Minnesota state champ out of Shakopee, is currently ranked as a top-10 national recruit at 138 pounds, and on the cusp of the national top 50 for all senior wrestlers across all weight classes. His state titles have come at three different weights: 106 as a freshman, 120 as a sophomore and 126 as a junior. He is a seven-time Fargo All-American at the cadet and junior levels, including honors in both freestyle and Greco in 2016. He is also a defending Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, having won the championship at 126 pounds last winter.

“All-around, Jones is a very good wrestler,” said Eggum. “He’s already won three state titles, so he’s had success in high school, but he seems to be really developing as a wrestler. Great scrambler, great on the mat, phenomenal on top.”

Bergeland, the defending 132-pound Minnesota state champ wrestling for Centennial High School, made a huge impression over the summer with his run to the 138-pound title bout at the prestigious Super 32 national junior tournament. Bergeland also won the 140-pound title at the Journeyman Classic. He is currently ranked among the top 100 senior wrestlers nationally across all weight classes. He is a three-time section champion in Minnesota, and a two-time finalist in Minnesota’s Christmas Tournament. At the cadet level, Bergeland was an All-American in both freestyle and Greco in 2014-15. He has also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-State recognition from The Guillotine last year.

“Bergeland came off a great tournament out at Super 32s where he wrestled well against the nation’s best,” said Eggum. “He’s got a great work ethic and great gas tank. He’s strong defense and seems like he’s making strides to be even better.”

Another Shakopee signee, Crowe is a three-time state placewinner, most recently taking third at 132 pounds last year. He had previously placed sixth and fourth, respectively, as a freshman and a sophomore wrestling at 113 pounds. He was a Fargo All-American in Greco last summer at 138 pounds, adding to multiple cadet All-American performances at junior nationals in 2013 and 2014. He is also a Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, claiming the 132-pound title in 2015.

“Crowe is a strong mat wrestler. We see a lot of room for growth for him as an individual,” said Eggum. “We’ve very excited about what he brings to the table.”

Three Gopher greats – Tony Nelson, Jayson Ness and current volunteer assistant coach Zach Sanders – all delivered podium performances wrestling freestyle at the Bill Farrell Open in New York City on Saturday. While Ness and Sanders finished third at 61 and 57 kilograms, respectively, Nelson headlined the trio’s efforts by winning the 125-kilogram title.

Nelson reached the title bout without allowing a single point to either Jewoo Sin or Chadwick Hanke, winning those matches by a combined 15-0 total. His championship match against Dom Bradley was much closer than those previous contests, with the score tied at four late into the match. A takedown in the final 30 seconds gave Nelson the lead, 6-4, which would be the final score.

Ness looked strong during a 4-1 day. All four of his victories came by tech fall, including three 10-0 wins over Joel Webster, Nick Lee and Nahshon Garrett. He added a 12-2 tech over Cody Brewer in the third-place match. His lone defeat came in the semifinals against four-time NCAA champ Logan Stieber.

Sanders, who officially joined the Gopher coaching staff this season after several years as a grad assistant, went 3-1 in the event. He began his day with a 10-0 tech fall over long-time rival Frank Perrelli before dropping a 3-3 decision on criteria to Russian grappler Khasankhusein Badrudinov. A 7-0 decision over Nodirjon Safarov set up a rematch with Perrelli in the third-place match, one in which Sanders scored a 4-3 decision.

Sanders, Ness and Nelson were collegiate standouts at Minnesota. Sanders was a four-time All-American; Ness was a four-time All-American and a national champ; and Nelson was a four-time All-American, three-time national finalist and two-time national champion.

The Bill Farrell Open will continue tomorrow from the New York City Athletic Club, with Greco-Roman taking center stage. Several Gopher alums will be in that field as well. "Game On: Huskers v. Gophers" - Lincoln Journal Star

There is a lot more at the link.

HOW DO THE HUSKERS LIGHT UP THE SCOREBOARD?

1. Have an offensive line that is sick and tired of the last five weeks and shows up on a mission and with a bad attitude. The old O-line band is almost all back together with Jerald Foster's return. The goal was for NU to be a top-three running team in the Big Ten. The Huskers have dropped to fifth. Time to make a charge...

HOW DO THE BLACKSHIRTS SHUT 'EM DOWN?

1. Limit yards after contact. You can say this every week, but think of past Nebraska-Minnesota games when it hasn't gone well for the Huskers. In those games, you'll remember Gophers taking runs that looked like 2 or 3 yards and falling forward until 5 or 6 yards were had...

TOMMY ARMSTRONG

QB, No. 4: All signs have pointed to the senior playing Saturday after going through concussion protocol. If he's considered healthy enough to play, he's considered healthy enough to do everything he normally does.

THERE'S A HUSKER PARTY IF …

Gophers bring enough Dilly bars for everyone (Dairy Queen is based in Minneapolis). ... Tommy is healthy, Tommy runs, Tommy throws no picks. ... Minnesota team plane travels through time warp on way to Lincoln that makes it 1983 again.

SUNDAY BRUNCH STINKS FOR HUSKER FANS IF …

Repeated stat of the day is about how Nebraska hadn't lost three straight since 2008. No, that didn't even happen last year. ... Everyone's talking about that big game the final week of the season to decide the West: Minnesota-Wisconsin.

THANK YOU, VETS!!!!

"Truly sacrificing for a cause beyond self" is becoming an increasingly foreign concept to citizens all over. Unfortunately, many of us have become self-involved without any sense of appreciation for those who sacrifice for us, or more importantly, wanna jump in and become part of the solution ourselves. I want to ALWAYS encourage those who have done a large part to defend our freedoms.. I don't want to ever think that we can take our freedom for granted.

The Marines just had their birthday, so I want to say thank you for those who have served in that great branch of the military. To those like my brother(ARMY) who has done 3 tours in Iraq, and my Dad, much appreciated to help those with the mission they were given and trained to succeed. If we are a divided nation, I pray At LEAST we can agree how fortunate we are to have the military vets who sacrificed so that we can go to work and school with peace compared to many other countries.. Vets, you are always in my prayers and are FAR AND AWAY, the true heroes of our country.. All I can offer you is a humble, "THANK YOU" for serving and protecting us... Happy VETERANS DAY!!!

Get out and buy your goggles
