U.S. Soccer

Fired Klinsmann today. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Sounds like they may give the job back to Arena. I don't know much about him as I wasn't into soccer when he was the international coach the first time around but know that he got us to the world cup quarters in 02 and won the gold cup twice.

Southern Illinois postgame presser

Nate Mason
  • Definitely sluggish to start the first half. Didn't play well to start, but that didn't have to do with Thanksgiving break or anything. Need to grow up and get in the gym and get better.
  • It's different to not have Reggie as a shot blocker in the middle, but Eric Curry has similar qualities.
  • Need to come out and throw the first punch against Florida State.
  • We guarded the three-point line well, but in the second half we got lazy defensively.
  • Telling Jordan Murphy to keep shooting. He needs to be confident shooting
Dupree McBrayer
  • Need to have a better start.
  • Eric Curry is maturing in front of our eyes. He made some mistakes, but it's up to us to keep him playing within himself.
Richard Pitino
  • Obviously pleased with the 6-0 start, but we needed a wake-up call.
  • From an offensive standpoint, we weren't really connected. We got frustrated because we were missing shots.
  • If you defend and rebound and guard the three, you're going to be in every game. We did that tonight.
  • After the shootaround, we made the decision to not have Reggie play. No idea if he'll be back for Florida State. Trainer told me can't play, so that's all there is to it.
  • I thought the crowd was tremendous. No students obviously, but obviously if they were here the crowd would have been even better.
  • We should be a no ego program. We have not earned the right to have an ego.
  • Bakary gave us great minutes.
  • I want Akeem to take good shots. If you're open, great. If not, provide value otherwise. I thought he gave us good minutes.
  • Wasn't happy with our post players' shot selection.
  • Left a lot of points on the board from free throws. We emphasize free throws every day. We talk about it. I think we're a much better free throw shooting than we showed. It's kind of mental and spiraled downward for us.

Quick Joshua Croslen Update

Hey Guys: apologies for the delay on this, I have been traveling and spending some time with family for Thanksgiving. Included in the tweet is a quick look at Joshua Croslen's highlights from his win in last week's playoff game vs. Austin-Vandegrift, below is a quick update with some words from him after the game.

---

Joshua Croslen played like a locomotive in the middle of defensive line for his Cibolo-Steele team as the Knights blanked Austin-Vandegrift last Friday night, 17-0.

Afterwards, he affirmed that things are also full-steam ahead with Minnesota and he has no further official visits scheduled.

“I’ve got nothing planned right now,” he said. “I’m still pretty solid to them - I’m pretty sure I’m going to sign in February.”

Croslen took his official visit to Minneapolis earlier this month and was on-hand for the Gophers’ win over Purdue.

As nice as it is to catch a win on an official visit, it’s no surprise that a defensive lineman remembers another key detail about the trip up north.

“My official visit was great,” he said. “They treated me nice, took me out to eat at a nice restaurant and showed me a good time, it was great. That was my favorite part - they took me to Fogo de Chao. I’ve never been there, so that was a great experience.”

Croslen committed to Minnesota in July, just about a month after being offered by the Gophers. Since then, no other schools have stepped up in a significant way to try and sway him from his commitment, but that’s fine with him, as he’s in a good place with Tracy Claeys’ staff.

“Things are going great,” he said. “I’m pretty solid to them, they’re a good school and a great team. I love the coaches, love the players.”

Steele looks to continue its state playoff run today, as it takes on Weslaco East at 6 pm.

Any questions?

this NOT the gopher team/program that was ripped to shreds by so many last year. This team is legit. For those who want to keep taking shots at Pitino there is not much you can say up until this point. The boys have performed.

Tbings that stuck out:

1. The preseason SEC player of the year couldn't even check/box out Reggie lynch. The dude is an animal
2. Arkansas took OFF the press which they rarely do because the gophers tore it to shreds and kept scoring on it
3. Our interior passing was lights out
4. We made 9 threes. Remember our shooting worries? Na, me neither
5. 6 gophers in double figures. 6!!!! And it's been like this every game!

My post to the pro-Claeys people...

Let me start this thread off saying I have been a doubter. I predicted 6 total wins in the prediction thread. I was wrong. We are at 8 already with 2 games left. We recruited a great class last year and this year, despite not having a long term contract, we have some good recruits lined up (I don't know if Gopher fans understand how good it is to get a guy from the Cibolo Steele program).

I don't want to be a doubter but I need help as I am 95% sure the 4 year contract is ready to be given to Claeys. So help me ease my concerns. Here they are...

Why is Claeys so non-interactive with his players during the game? Is it like this all the time. I hate asking, but maybe a player's dad can help me here. I was lucky that I had a coach in my playing days that got so involved. He was like my dad and during the games, he was right there with us and it helped.

Can this staff recruit and DEVELOP an above average QB ?

Is it really because he is a new HC, or is Claeys really that bad at key time management decisions ? Not just the play calls or timeouts, but even getting in the huddle and telling his guys stay in bounds to make sure the clock bleeds, etc.

The athletic village is HUGE for recruiting. When Claeys goes into the house of a southern inner city kid, can he get them here ? Does he have that "this is a guy I want to play for?" appeal ?

Does he get in the faces of his assistants the way Saban, Harbaugh, or Meyer do when they are not happy with that part of the team they are in charge of? Does he make assistants around him better by pushing them?

We have beat some bad teams this year. Can he actually take a team of less talented players and out coach the opposition to get us in the real win column not the "moral victory" column against the Iowa's, PSU's, etc. Last time I checked, almost wins don't help us get to the Rose Bowl.

What am I missing ? What makes you feel he is the guy that can get us to that "1 spot above where Mason had us" mark?
