Patrick Reusse needs to be careful what he wishes for or what he wants Gopher fans to wish for based on his article today in the Star Tribune.
PJ Fleck has averaged more wins per season compared to any Gopher head football coach in history (not including the shortened pandemic season) and that number is 8 wins per season. Since the Gophers last won the Rose Bowl, it’s been over a half century since Gopher fans have experienced this kind of stability in the football program. Thank goodness for PJ Fleck, his staff, and AD Mark Coyle for hiring PJ and extending PJ and staff with contract extensions plus raises.

They said he would be named Head Coach. WRONG. Then they said he and Fickel could co -exist and he was STAYING. WRONG AGAIN. Barry Alvarez still thinks he runs everything, he has to be more livid than ever.

1 million to be spread around. Fleck has a very solid staff, glad to hear this.

I have confirmed that Georgia WR Eric Singleton Jr is on an official visit currently.

Good morning Minnesota fans! Some of you may remember me from my previous stint, some may not, but I am happy to say that I am back to join Sean and Dylan as a staff writer on The Gopher Report.

I previously was a recruiting analyst for this site, but my new role will be more of a hybrid type that will allow me to cover all things related to Minnesota. With all of the different great programs at this school, the opportunity to have a hand in coverage for all of them really excites me.

That said, with signing day right around the corner, expect a ton of recruiting coverage this month. We want to be the best source of information available for you all and I hope to help make that happen. My first story back is an update on your 2023 QB commit Drew Viotto, who will be an early enrollee in January.

Good morning everyone, Happy Thursday…

Here’s your notes for today… more to hopefully come.

- Minnesota was active in offers yesterday, Florida S Donovan McMillon, Iowa DB Terry Roberts, Georgia State LB Jamil Muhummad, Kent State LT Marcellus Marshall, and Louisville DB Benjamin Perry.

As said yesterday, McMillon will be a tough pull. He’s going to have plenty of offers including Pittsburgh and West Virginia which I would probably have as the favorites right now.

Chances: Medium

Terry Roberts also picked up an offer from Penn State, the Nittany Lions if they push would also likely be the favorites but it’s unclear right now if they will.

Chances: Medium-High

Jamil Muhammad is headed to SoCal this weekend to visit USC, will be tough for anyone else if the Trojans want him in my opinion.

Chances: Low

Marcellus Marshall is interesting we’ll see what happens there. Think the Gophers could be in a solid spot in that one but Colorado also recently offered. Former Kent St head coach Sean Lewis was recently hired by Deion Sanders to be his offensive coordinator.

Chances: TBD

Benjamin Perry was at Illinois before being at Louisville and is now looking for a third school. He tweeted our an offer but now no longer has that tweet available, not any of his offer tweets available.

2023 Updates:

Texas WR Jaelen Smith will be on campus this week Jen for an official visit. He was at Michigan State last weekend, that visit went very well. I think the Gophers can put themselves in a very good spot going forward. That being said, I don’t expect a commitment anytime soon unless he gets completely blown away. He’ll sign somewhere in February.

WMU WR Corey Crooms will also be on campus. I would be a little surprised if we don’t see a commitment out of him in the near future as long as the official visit goes well.

WMU LB Ryan Selig will be on campus alongside Crooms. He’ll be at Iowa State on Friday and part of Saturday before arriving in Minneapolis. We’ll have a much better idea of his recruitment come Sunday night when TGR hopes to catch up with him.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Wisconsin transfer Markus Allen who decommitted it appears last night ends up back at Wisconsin. The hiring of Phil Longo makes the Badgers an interesting spot going forward, certainly not the type of offense we’ve seen the Badgers run, well, ever.

I continue to hear very good things about Phillip Daniels and the Gophers landing him when he makes a decision on December 21.

A short-lived transfer addition for the Gophers

What do we need from the portal???

Now that we have seen a decent sample size heading to the the BIG10 what does everyone think from what they have seen?

Personally, I have seen a struggle to score due to many of the guards inabilities to create offense off the dribble as well as our two studs being complete no shows. Here is what I've seen from each player

Cooper - savvy, I actually think he as been our most consistent player from the first game until now. You sort of know what you will get from him and does a nice job TRYING To make the right play most of the time. He is not a good defender and is at this point, a liability at the free throw line

Henley - He just can't get out of his own way. Every time he makes a great move to the bucket, it's followed up by a bad decision, a missed shot, or a turnover. I see something there, but he just can't put anything together. He also at this point thinks he is a better shooter than what he appears to be. They need him to be a bigger factor since he is the only one that I've seen outside of Cooper who has some wiggle and can get into the lane

Battle - he has been brutal. Poor shot selection, not attacking the basket, not getting the ball into the spots that he had success with last year. Part of this is on the other players as well, we don't have the Bball IQ of last years experienced guards. He needs to paly like an ALL-BIG10 player for us to have ANY chance, and right now that's not happening.

Garcia - Has been IMO the biggest disappointment to this point. He isn't giving us much of anything. Struggling to finish inside, struggling to score from the outside, and also a liability on the glass and defending. I just haven't seen any sort of spark or positive impact on the game from him. If he doesn't really step up his game, we will REALLY be bad this year

Thompson - Meh.... not sure why he even starts to be honest, Payne laps him in production. HE has to find a way to have an impact other than making a 3 from time to time or he won't see the floor anymore.

Payne - Has been my biggest surprise. Yes he is raw, but he plays hard and is physical. He will be a great player in the big10 for years to come. Showed some shot blocking timing last night as well. Has quickly learned how to stay on the floor more as he was in foul trouble early and often the first few games. Looking forward to his development as his footwork isn't all that clean and doesn't know how to quite finish shots around the hoop with bigger body's around

Carrington - if he isn't hitting shots, he really isn't doing much for us. He isn't a great passer or ballhandler which means he better space the floor with his shot. Unfortunately he can't shoot from deep right now and is even worse at the FT line

Samuels - to no fault of his own, he is what he is.

Ola- Joseph - I've been pretty surprised with him. He is giving us more than I would have imagined at the start of the year. He plays under control for the most part, plays tough D, and is fairly physical. He should be taking Garcia's min in no time if he doesn't start playing better
