You all are likely familiar with 2023 linebacker Asa Newsom, the three-star linebacker out of Waverly, Iowa. Minnesota is said to be a top four school for him along with Iowa, Kansas State, and Stanford.

His brother, Mosai, just announced his intention to transfer from Nebraska with two years of eligibility remaining at defensive tackle.

Asa has said that he and his brother have always dreamt of playing with each other, so it would seem likely that the schools recruiting Asa will jump in for Mosai as well. The belief has been that Minnesota isn't looking for a defensive lineman in the portal, but that could change quickly if it meant they were getting the duo.

Worth keeping an eye on.

Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz has been named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, an award annually given to the best center in college football.

We have a home dual tonight at 7pm vs. Augustana at Williams Arena, and it's streamed live on B1G+!!! There will also be a high school dual just before that at 4pm where 2023 signee Max McEnelly will lead his #5 ranked Waconia Wildcats as they take on Tracy-Milory-Balaton. Attendees of the high school match will also get access to the Gopher match.

Division II Augustana recently lost 40-4 to SDSU, so we're using this match as an opportunity to wrestle many of our backups in this match. This should be a fun night of Minnesota wrestling, so come on down if you can!!!

Gophers Set for Thursday Throwdown with Augustana​

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota wrestling program has a short turnaround this week, as they'll take on the Augustana Vikings for a rare Thursday contest on December 1 at 7:00 p.m.

The dual will take place inside WIlliams Arena, as Minnesota volleyball prepares for the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships next door at Maturi Pavilion. Fans can watch the dual live on B1G+ or follow along for live match-by-match updates on Twitter at @GopherWrestling.

Minnesota will also be hosting a high school dual prior to the collegiate action, as they celebrate Community Day for the Waconia and Tracy communities. 2022 U17 World Bronze medalist and Class of 2023 Gopher signee Max McEnelly will lead his fifth-ranked Waconia Wildcats (Class AAA) against Single-A foe Tracy-Milory-Balaton Panthers at 4:00 p.m. CST.

Purchase of a ticket to the Minnesota-Augustana dual will allow entry to both contests on Thursday evening, as doors to Williams Arena will open at 3:30 p.m. CST. There will be no re-entry allowed at the event.

Tale of the Tape - The Vikings

Augustana is led by head coach Jason Reitmeier, who is in his 20th season as head coach with a 202-96 career mark at the helm. The Vikings currently have six wrestlers ranked in the NWCA Division-II polls, four of which are slated to compete in Thursday's dual.

Augustana heads into the contest 0-1 on the year after falling to Division-I opponent South Dakota State by a score of 40-4 earlier this season. Tenth-ranked Miles Fitzgerald was the lone victor in that contest, winning by 11-2 major decision over Ryan Dolezal.

The Series with Augustana

Minnesota has only squared off with Augustana once in its 122-year history, taking place on December 5, 1997 as the Gophers rolled their Division-II counterpart by a score of 53-0.
At the time, it had tied for the second-largest margin of victory in program history, only to be outdone by a performance that occurred that same day as the Gophers trounced Truman State by a score of 57-0 only hours prior.

Potential Matchups

Minnesota's starting lineup will see a different look this Thursday, as a total of six weights could see Gophers making their first career start. Between the starting lineups, there are a total of six-ranked wrestlers between the two divisions.

South Dakota native Quincy Hulverson is slated to make his first career start at 125 pounds as he could face a ranked test in No. 8 Jaxson Rohman.
The Gophers could see a trio of former NCAA qualifiers make their season debuts in the starting lineup, as Jake Gliva, Marcos Polanco, and Michial Foy all appear in the probables.
Interesting battle looms at 165 pounds as No. 27 Andrew Sparks faces the sixth-ranked wrestler in Division-II, Tyler Wagener.

Jared Krattiger will look to keep his undefeated season rolling at 174 pounds, as he squares off against Jacob Tvinnereim.

At 184 pounds, Michial Foy or Sam Skillings will be tasked with the toughest test of the evening, as they are set to square off against Division-II's fourth-ranked Cade Mueller.

Following Thursday's action with Augustana, the "U" will head to Stillwater, Okla., for their annual rivalry dual with the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sunday, Dec. 4. The dual will take place at 2:00 p.m. CST inside the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena and will be aired live on ESPN+.

The quarterback for Elk River, Cade Osterman's father played for the Gophers. At first I was "Who was Aaron Osterman?" But then it rang a bell. He was a pretty decent receiver for Jim Wacker from 1992-94 with five touchdowns his last year and 111 total catches in three years. Elk River held on for the 4A title. The kid is a running quarterback. Sounds like the Gophers have offered the Maple Grove quarterback, Kilzer, another kid who can run it. He threw it a little too much for Rosemount who were favored. That happens with running teams who don't throw the ball.

The one thing you can say about our young Gophers ladies hoops team is they can shoot free throws. Clutch free throws to get it to double OT where they beat Penn State 98-96 when it looked like Minnesota would lose this game a few times. I LOVE THE FRESHMEN. Mara Braun has star written all over her and Amaya Battle as well as Mallory Heyer are awesome in their own right.. Borowicz is a small guard and she is a redshirt freshman as well, who played great tonight.

Dont get me wrong. This team needs to learn to play defense much better, be more selective in shots, rebound and communicate better but they are fun to watch. Those 4 freshman will add Holloway back next year plus some size. Lindsay went small towards the end of the game and I think that actually helped at the end. LOTS OF POTENTIAL ON THE FLOOR FOR THE GOPHERS!!! Good victory to start the Big Ten season for this young team.

Is playing left guard for K-State in Big 12 title game vs TCU. They just said he was the Big 12 offensive lineman of the year. Would have been nice in M&G.

I watched all 7 state championship games in Ohio. They are all televised throughout the state. You wont find a lot of prospects for D1 schools in the lower 3 divisions but the top 4 divisions are where the D1 college talent exists in Ohio.

I will start from the smallest division of the 4, Division 4. Cleveland Glenville was a former pipeline for Ohio State when Jim Tressel was there. Urban Meyer had a more national agenda in recruiting and Glenville did not have the same clout as when John Cooper and Tressel were coaching the Buckeyes. Now, Ryan Day is trying to re-establish that pipeline. Glenville has a LB, ARVELL REESE, that Ohio State is going to sign and a 2024 CB named BRYCE WEST that badly wants to sign with the Buckeyes and is the top kid from Ohio in that class. No one else I saw in the state championship game was a D1 college worthy player though there was talent on the field. Glenville won their first state championship in football under coach Ted Ginn Sr., this year, as they beat Cincinnati Wyoming in the state finals.

Division 3, I did not see anyone that was good enough to play in the Big Ten besides guys already committed. Canfield High School(Youngstown area) beat Bloom Carroll (Columbus area) in the state finals. DIVISION 2 saw Toledo Central Catholic beat Akron Hoban for the state championship. For Toledo CC, BRADEN AWLS is a University of Toledo commit that I believe is good enough to start at a Big Ten school. Great size, quickness, and instincts at Safety or WR. If I was Minnesota, I would keep an eye on sophomore MARK NAVE who is a 6-4 325 pound o-lineman.. LOTS OF UPSIDE to this kid. Hoban has Mr. Football in Ohio in RB LAMAR SPERLING. He had over 350 yards rushing in the state championship game with 3 TDs in a LOSING EFFORT. Great runner that is probably too light(185 pounds) to play RB in the Big Ten but he just does not go down with one hit. He is a coup for University of Buffalo but I think he could have gone bigger than that. Hoban has a starting WR named PAYTON COOK who has good speed and size as a FRESHMAN in high school.. May be a basketball prospect as well. He had 16 catches this year and 4 TDs but Hoban had upperclassmen that were very good weapons so he was not the feature player this year.. He will be a feature player, next year.

DIVISION 1 had Lakewood St Eds(Cleveland area) beating Springfield(northeast of Dayton). Springfield has a player named Anthony Brown whose brother is a Gopher WR and Anthony at one time was committed to Minnesota. Brown is good but I think Minnesota can recruit better players at WR. Springfield has a junior safety AARON SCOTT that could easily play at a school like Minnesota.. Good ballhawk and excellent tackler at safety with good speed. Lakewood St Eds has 2 junior O-linemen that are twins, DEVONTAE and DEONTAE ARMSTRONG.. Both are VERY ATHLETIC and 6-5 285 lbs. Lots of upside and the big schools are calling. They also have a WR that is a junior named KYAN MASON. Problem is that he is 155 lbs, sopping wet, but he will play D1 football.. Super fast, good route runner, and excellent hands. I think Mason is a better prospect than Anthony Brown.

Minnesota won their first 2 rounds in volleyball in Minneapolis. Now, in their bracket, Minnesota is going to have to beat Ohio State, probably Texas, and maybe Wisconsin to get to the finals. One match at a time. But we are playing the best volleyball we have played the whole year so this is an exciting time.. Minnesota has played almost every team left in their bracket, during the regular season. Fun time of the year and hope we end with a Cinderella run to end Hugh's era at the U.

I see Concordia St Paul was in the NCAA finals in Division 2, though they got beat tonight. I still would like to know if Minnesota would consider their coach for the Gophers job if he is interested. 9 national championships at any level is nothing to sneeze at, even for a top program like Minnesota.

Mens team with a dominant 5-0 shutout vs #13 Michigan State. This is a prime example of why the diehard hockey fans despise Big 10 hockey though- a match up of two top 15 teams and the atmosphere was about as electric as a funeral home 🤦‍♂️

Usually, I wouldn't post a story this late but with him teasing some sort of announcement sooner than later, thought I'd get it up just in case. I like Minnesota here a lot, as long as they want him, I think he's going to be a Gopher.
