WOW!!! VOLLEYBALL HAD A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

2 victories against Top 10 opponents in 2 days to end the regular season... ON THE ROAD!!! Tonight, the Gopher ladies SWEPT #3 ranked Nebraska in straight sets!!! Last night, our Gophers beat Ohio State on the road!!!! The ladies are playing some of their best volleyball they have all year. What is amazing is that Minnesota has swept both Wisconsin and Nebraska in wins this year. Wisconsin and Nebraska are the top 2 teams in the Big Ten. So proud of Gopher volleyball team and look forward to NCAAs.

We ended up being tied for 3rd in the Big Ten with Ohio State, this year!!

ENJOY MO IBRAHIM WHILE WE GOT HIM

Only 6 more quarters(including the bowl game) that we get to see Mo play in the Maroon and Gold... I like the comparison with Emmitt Smith as far as style.. Not the fastest guy but has great vision, cut back ability, and balance with a sense of timing. So fun to watch. One of my all time favorite Gophers I have seen play!!

Thank you for all the great memories, Mo!!!

The Flaw of the Developmental Program

55 feels like teaching again. Gather round and 55 wants to get you smarter. Here is the flaw I see in our developmental coaches we attract to Minnesota.

The ego of I made you and developed you. I saw that with Kill and see it to a lesser degree with Fleck but it’s there. The helmet schools don’t have that same mentality, they are fluid: They develop who they need to develop but also recognize that player that is special and head and shoulders better than the other guys. They don’t need to make them in their laboratory and create a player, that They deserve the credit for. Kill was the worst at this ego play.

Helmet schools work hard in recruiting and know when they land a stud. And then provide some direction and some instruction and this kid is off to the races making plays winning games for the staff.

Is it possible that Dylan Wright our most talented WR was victimized by this ego play?We know you are talented but we need to break you down and rebuild you and then get all the credit for your success. Dylan is like biatch….get me the rock fool so we can win. This dude can’t cover me.

You ask why #22 gets so many reps, if you say yessir and placate the egos you will be a teachers pet and favorite son regardless of production.

Athan is a stud, showed up a stud. He won us two games that we all knew we would have lost without him. Nebraska & Wisconsin but go back and pay attention to some of the comments about his play from Fleck and you’ll hear some of the developmental ego fighting to come out. This kid is a stud, turn his loose. Coach him and instruct him but he got it. He showed up on campus with it. He’s a playmaker and won’t jive with the ego coaching play over the long haul. Bateman showed up with it. The gave him instruction. But he was a a stud from Day 1. So was Dylan against Ohio State, his first game. Then he got jammed up and caught in the developmental ego play IMO.

This ego play from our developmental coaches is probably why our recruiting is so poor at the WR position. Because you must talk to a stud different than a teachers pet. A teachers pet is happy to be here, A stud is like….bruh I got options so treat me right or I’m out. If this staff can’t make this subtle adjustment, we’ve seen the best of Flecks era. If he can make this subtle adjustment. He can build a program we are all proud of. Someone said I don’t like Fleck. Not true, but what I do is that I make rich people richer. I know how to make Fleck elite fa real.

55 is a playmaking stud and if you come at me right, I’ll make you a Champion.

USC 26 transfers - #4 in the nation

USC has 26 transfers on their team this year. They are currently the 4th ranked team in the nation. The transfer portal has completely changed college football. Arguably, the transfer portal is more important than high school recruiting and here’s why: a 19-year old, or 20-year old, or 21-year old, or 22-year old that is anywhere from a 3-star to a 5-star athlete and has already played on a college football team can help your team immediately far more than an 18-year old. Look at some of the players USC picked up. Coaches that love the transfer portal will benefit greatly by using it and coaches that don’t love the transfer portal and thus don’t use it are in big trouble.

What a Great Win

What a Great Win for the Gophers. They knew the Big Ten West title was not going to happen. This coaching staff and players still gave a 110% effort and ended the season with a big win at Wisconsin capturing the Paul Bunyan Axe for the second year in a row. Congratulations Coach Fleck and your coaching staff for getting this team prepared in the fabulous way you did. Another 8 win season and possibly a 9 win season after your upcoming bowl game. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.

Football Kaliakmanis - Big Ten Freshman of the Week

University of Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week today after his performance on Saturday at Wisconsin.

Kaliakmanis led the Gophers to a 23-16 border battle win against the Badgers and set career highs in completions (19), attempts (29), yards (319) and touchdowns (2). He completed nine passes of 15 yards or more and averaged 16.8 yards per completion, as Minnesota rallied from a 16-13 fourth-quarter deficit to retain Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

The Kaliakmanis-led offense finished with 416 yards of total offense (319 passing and 97 rushing), which was the most yards for the Gophers against the Badgers since racking up 501 yards in 2007. Minnesota’s 319 passing yards was its second-highest total this season (372 vs Western Illinois), the second-most against Wisconsin since 2000 (352 in 2007) and the second-most allowed by the Badgers (320 vs Purdue) this year.

Kaliakmanis is the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Justin Walley received the honor on Nov. 29, 2021. He is the first Minnesota quarterback to be feted since Tanner Morgan earned the weekly honor on Oct. 29, 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 10 Gophers (1-0) are set to hit the road this weekend fresh off the Thanksgiving holiday, as they will square off against No. 24 South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon in their first road dual of the season.

The road trip will kick off three-straight weekends of traveling for the Maroon & Gold and will also be Minnesota's first ranked contest of the season after coming off a 19-15 win over Binghamton in the home opener. It will be the first time the "U' has battled the Jackrabbits on the road since 2019, where they rolled to a 22-10 victory.

Action begins at 1:00 p.m. CST and will be broadcast live on FloWrestling ($). Fans can also follow along to match-by-match updates on Twitter at @GopherWrestling.

Tale of the Tape - The Jackrabbits

South Dakota State is led by head coach Damion Hahn, a two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American for Minnesota in his time as a competitor. Hahn carries a 34-26 record at the helm and leads a lineup that houses six ranked wrestlers, including seniors Clay Carlson and Tanner Sloan.

South Dakota State heads into the contest with a 1-0 record on the season after a 40-4 dismantling of Augustana in their home opener. The Jackrabbits also hosted their annual Daktronics Open last weekend, where they came home with five champions on the day.

The Series with South Dakota State

Minnesota carries an all-time series lead of 24-5 over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a series that began during the 1950 season. The Gophers have won the previous eight contests with SDSU dating back to 1977, holding the longest win streak for either team in the history of the series.

First Meeting: W, 22-4 (1/30/1950)
Last Meeting: W, 27-13 (11/28/2021)
Longest Win Streak: W8 (1/12/1977-11/28/2021)
Longest Losing Streak: L3 (12/21/1968-12/19/1970)
Current Streak: W8

Last Meeting:

Minnesota hosted South Dakota State for a home dual on November 28, 2021, where the Golden Gophers claimed seven of ten bouts en route to a 27-13 victory. Bonus-point victories proved to be the difference in the contest as Isaiah Salazar, Gable Steveson, Patrick McKee, Jake Gliva, and Brayton Lee all won by bonus points. Michael Blockhus and
Michial Foy rounded out the rest of Minnesota's wins, as Foy headlined the dual with a 9-3 victory over No. 6 Tanner Sloan at 197 pounds. The dual win was also Minnesota's 1000th win in program history.

Potential Matchups:

Sunday's matchup with South Dakota State will hold a total of 15 ranked wrestlers in the starting lineups, with the potential for five ranked contests throughout the dual

This weekend could see the return of Patrick McKee in the starting lineup at 125 pounds following his pin over Iowa State's Kysen Terukina at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Tuesday. He would take on SDSU's Tanner Jordan, in which McKee is 3-0 against him with all three wins coming by bonus points.

The potential feature bout of the afternoon would come at 141 pounds, where No. 3 Jake Bergeland would face No. 6 Clay Carlson. Bergeland is 0-3 all-time against Carlson with the two last competing in the Cliff Keen Invitational last December. However, Bergeland has been much improved since their last meeting, winning 20 of his last 26 bouts, which includes becoming an All-American for the first time of his career at the NCAA Championships last season.

At 165 pounds, Andrew Sparks will get another crack at ranked foe Tanner Cook after falling to him in their contest last season. Sparks was leading the match 12-7 in the second period, before Cook would go feet-to-back and pin Sparks to kick off the dual.

Another ranked contest looms at 174 points, where Bailee O'Reilly could take on No. 12 Cade DeVos. The two faced off twice last season, with DeVos winning both contests.

184 pounds sees another ranked competitor at both sides, as Isaiah Salazar and Cade King could see each other on Sunday afternoon. Michial Foy is also listed at that weight for the Maroon & Gold, where he earned wins over both of South Dakota State's probable starters at that weight en route to a Daktronics Open title last weekend.

The final ranked bout of the dual would come at 197 pounds, where Garrett Joles could see his third-straight ranked opponent in No. 11 Tanner Sloan.

Up Next:

Following this weekend's road contest against the Jackrabbits, the Gophers will return home for a rare mid-week dual against Augustana on Thursday, December 1 at 7:00pm inside Williams Arena. The Maroon & Gold will then hit the road to compete in yet another installment of their storied rivalry with Oklahoma State on Sunday, December 4 at 2:00pm.
